Slave Bracelets

Does anyone know anything about the history of Slave bracelets? I'm googling around, trying to find some info. Are they originally Celtic, or do they go back even before that?

If anyone can tell me where to find some information, I'd appreciate it!

- this link is pretty interesting as to one explanation. They were used as currency and a show of wealth. Some lovely shapes that I'd like to see someone make in PMC! It would prolly cost a small fortune to make, but you could definitely "show your wealth" wearing it! Linda

Interesting site regarding the Slave Bracelets Linda, and interesting that Jerri brought up the topic. Last weekend I photographed some slave bracelets for a brochure I was doing for a customer. They were made with components made in Peru, and are the designs I traditionally think of as "Slave bracelets". Bracelet with a ring attached. Back to my Saturday morning reading,

Thanks! That was interesting.

What I'm really looking for (I think) is some information about the kind from the middle ages (?). The ones with the ring, and then chain that goes to a bracelet part. I'm just trying to find some information on the history of them.

I had a minute, so I thought I'd google, too. :)))

I think of slave collars and bracelets as being the type in the link as I was given a slave necklace made of pewter from an old boyfriend (pre-marriage days).

And sometimes it's just a matter of giving google the right search words... I used the words "origin of.." in my search string. Maybe that would help you narrow it down more? Good luck! :) Linda

The type that Jerri described are the style that I recently photographed. They were made in Peru, and there were also anklets with a toe ring attached on a chain. I remember the style being very popular when my daughters were in their teens. One daughter in particular had a lovely one made of sterling.

This is something I rarely do, reply to my own posting, but I had the time to remember what else those bracelets were called, and they are harem bracelets or hand flower bracelets. A quickie Google brought up a slew of links for harem bracelets, and I had to run get cookies out of the oven before they birned so I did not Google hand flower yet.

Signing out and back to the kitchen.

I'd found that too. Somewhere, I read about how they were used to profess love or something like that, during the middle ages. I was just trying to find out a little more.

Ahhh... I remember Harem Bracelets. :)) I remember I had some for my feet - lovely garish pink & yellow flowers and it attached around my ankle and toe. Wonderful way to go barefoot, yet still look like you had shoes on. love, Linda
