Thinking about scanners...

Hey all,

I know this subject has been done to death, and I have googled my brains out and read Bead Notes too. But I need to switch from a digital camera to a scanner. The digital camera I use is not mine (Epson 800 PhotoPC), I loan it from someone else and I'm sick to death of playing games with this person about using it (it is *never* used except when I do). This person will not part with it either (even though some functions on it don't work anymore). I recently aquired an HP scanner, which I can't get to work on XP. :-( So I've had my eye on a Canon CanoScan LiDE 20. I've tested it with a necklace and from what I saw, the scan was pretty good looking (except for the whole pic shaded from light to dark because the top was tilted from the necklace-but that can be fixed with fabric draped over it correct?). Has anyone ever used that particular scanner for beads and/or jewelry? The scanner is compatible with XP, and is really compact and small which I like since I have an issue with space, and I'm really leaning towards it. Plus, it's under a hundred bucks, which is pretty much my budget for this. But I wanted the opinion of the experts first. ;-) Thanks for any help you can give me!

I have this particular scanner and I love it. Because of the indirect light that it uses (most scanners use direct light) it is less likely to damage or break down anything that is being scanned. I haven't used it for scanning jewelry, but I have used it for scanning scrapbook pages that have lumpy embellishments, and it does really well. I personally feel it is a really good bet! We tend to research everything to death before we buy it, and we couldn't wait for this particular scanner to come out so we could get it. I can't believe it's come down so much in price! Anyway, I don't believe you'll be disappointed. I plan to start experimenting with scanning, and am trying to find a piece of grey velvet to drape over the jewelry pieces.

Oh thank you Jalynne! This is what I wanted to hear! LOL! And yes, the price has come down. I was told by the person I tested the scanner with, that he got his for under $50.00 on sale. I've seen it for usually a bit more, but maybe I'll get lucky and can spend the rest on beads. ;-)

Valerie, I love my old Vivitar Viviscan. Any good scanner can be made more functional for beady stuff than most digital cameras. I highly recommend that you read the notes on scanning over at

; there's a lot of archived input from people. I have tips over there on making a shadowbox out of foamcore strips--raises it up an inch or two and makes a huge difference as it captures the light. That's important--leakage causes that gradation in light you noticed on a trial scan. Also, get a decent graphics program if you can, being able to "tweak" the bright and contrast, the gamma settings, all makes a big differece in the final picture. Sarajane

For the original poster - did you make sure that the scanner has XP drivers available? I had a Visioneer 6100 that was not XP-compatible. Period - no way - ain't gonna happen. That's okay because I knew that before I upgraded to XP Pro. I bought a new Visioneer and a friend offered to buy my old scanner. It still works - just not with XP.

I have an HP 5200c scanner, when I wanted to move it over to my XP computer, I went to HP's website and downloaded the driver package. http://

Hey you guys!! I'm here, LOL! Frequent reader, rather infrequent poster. Back is as good as it's gonna get - but I am back at work, and managing to stay within my limits for activity/lifting etc. Weather is still too warm for my likin', but the sunsets are beautiful lately. We have the clouds from the northwest storms, but none of the moisture. Need to hop in my Jeep and into the hills soon, as I am certain the Aspens are turning in the higher elevations. My son returned safely from the war in Iraq, skinny and full of shrapnel, but alive and hopefully not going back overseas anytime soon. BABE?, Yes, I am gonna try and head down there. Was down that way last month, and it was a record-breaker for heat the day I was there. Dang, this is lengthy....and I have lots more topics to read on RCB tonight. {{{{{{hugs}}}} to all! I and several others will be travelling to Oakland for BABE. I'd love to see you there.

Glad your son is home and safe. I so hate war!

I'd gladly send you some of this cold air form here, but I don't know how.

My mother was injured (some permanent) in a car accident last Christmas. We will be celebrating her 80th birthday Nov 29 in the Bay Area. After the party she's going up to her Trinity-Shasta Ntl Forest inholding. Long, long drive. And a time of year when the weather is very unpredictable.

Take care,

Tina
