Hi, newbie questions re embroidery machines

Hi all,

I am about to dip my toes into the world of machine embroidery. This started with me wanting a SM with font capabilites and over on alt.sewing Bronwyn suggested I look at a dedicated embroidery machine as I have no real need to replace the sewing functions of my current SM. I am seriously considering a Janome 300E or 350E (I have and like my Janome overlocker) or other machine at a similar-ish price - HuskyStar EM10, Brother Innov-is 700EII.

I know all the manufacturers have their own file formats - how easy is it to convert images to these formats?

I see Embird mentioned frequently - is this a better buy than the manufacturers' own separate (and as expensive as the machine) software?

I would like to be able to embroider simple logos (initially just one colour) onto t-shirts and sweatshirts for my Land Rover club (not huge quantities - a few dozen a year?). Would one of the above machines be up to this?

I shall be heading off to my local dealer (who carries all the above machines) to test drive the different makes/models.

Any other makes I should consider in the price range of the above machines?

Many thanks

Lizzy

I should also have told you all that I am based in the UK - so makes available over here would be much appreciated :)
