Serger recommendation

I'm looking for a recommendation towards a Serger. My wife has a Bernina

180E and is doing real well with it. Now she wants a Serger to help fill up her sewing room. ;) She sews a lot of kids clothes for the grandkids. Any help steering me towards the right machine as a Christmas present would be appreciated. I don't want to spend as much as we spent on the Bernina. But I don't want a cheap machine either.

thanks in advance

I'll suggest you look in the archives of

formatting link
for issue #108(September 2003) and
formatting link
the July 2003 issue. Both magazines have a description of what sergers are, which might be best for you, etc plus a list of manufacturers, models, their stitches, tensions, and other comments. Also online at the different machine websites are more descriptions w/illustrations and sometimes MSRP. Remember though, sergers and sewing machines are like cars, different brands fit different people. You can do lots of research, then give your wife a card w/a note, such as gift-one serger, then take her to the store with scraps of fabric she will be more likely to sew and she can then make the decision on which one she prefers. You do need to look for a good dealer who will allow her to try out different ones and will give your wife service. Personally, I am totally sold on the Pfaff machines & sergers, but some of my relatives & friends would never use a Pfaff. As with all brands, there are different models, I have one serger that is about 10 years old, and

3 years ago, I upgraded to one w/cover stitch and all the bells/whistles I think I will ever need. I am a Gramma, too and most of my sewing is for a young grand daughter. Wish you great success. Emily

Thanks Emily, We did a similar activity before we bought the Bernina. We like they Bernina. But they tend to nickel and dime you to death if you want to add on. I suppose most manufacturers are like that.

My vote would be the Babylock Evolve. It's a little on the pricey side, although no where near the cost of the Bernina 180E. The threading on the Evolve' is almost magical. Be sure your wife is able to thread by herself whichever machine you are considering. Some of them out there are real stinkers to thread. I thought the 8 thread would be overkill, but I use all

8 threads reguarly for decorative stitching. I'm sure your wife will love whichever machine she ends up with. Do at least take a look at the Evolve'. I think you will be impressed. Mils

I just bought my third Babylock yesterday. I got the Evolve. My first serger was a Bernina about 18 or 20 years ago. I gave it to my sis and got a Babylock (that one went to my Mom who is still using it happily). I've kept moving up with features as they came out. The last one I had for over

13 years and it worked as great yesterday as it did the day I bought it. I'm one of those really happy owners.

Ihave a Babylock Imagine and I love it!!! I had a Singer and after I had to have my husband thread it a few times, he suggested I take it back and exchange it for the one that threads itself. Now I actually change the thread to the color I want and he has not had to thread it once!
