Hi All. I've been browsing for a while, being fairly new at stained glass i've not felt i've had anything to post.



I'm not sure if this is the correct place to ask my question, but it's the only newsgroup I can find that has anything to do with stained glass! I've been trying to find information about pattern making for stained glass. I'd like to make my own stained glass patterns (i've got a couple of pictures I'd like to reproduce in glass) but i'm not sure how to go about it. I've looked at a couple of programs on the internet, but is there any information anyone can pass along (or recommended reading) about making one's own patterns?? I'm particularly interested in knowing the best place to have the lines/cuts that go out to the end of the piece. Sorry if I sound vague.



Any help would be appreciated. I've been googling for information, but mostly end up with other people's stained glass patterns, etc.

I think the first thing to do before trying to make your own patterns is build a few dozen panels designed by others first and pay attention to the types of curves that are easy and hard to cut. Then you need to pay attention to how those curves are put together...notice the way the edges join, how corners meet or don't, etc. I'm hardly an accomplished pattern maker, but that's how *I* started.

Glasseye is a design program that will help. It tries to avoid impossible cuts and analyzes your pattern for difficulty. Eventually I'll afford a copy....probably the pro copy that comes with the nifty glass texture package.

There is a dover publications book by Jenny French with some good tips and suggestions on designing for stainedglass.

WOW a blast from the past! Hers was the first SG book I ever saw. Got to be over 20-25 years ago easily. Is she still alive and doing glass?
