converting photo to pattern - sizing

Hi,

This is the first time I've tried this and I'm totally confused about the sizing.

I have a (dated) pattern software program that graphed my photo into a .06 stitch size - whatever that means - which measures out to 18 stitches/inch. The program apparently divides into stitches and not grids.

The physical size of the graphed photo is 6"W x 10"H. I want to make a piece (counted needlepoint, not cross-stitch, although I think they're the same in terms of the pattern) around 18" x 24", or thereabouts - in other words a larger piece.

How do I do this? I'm totally lost when it comes to thinking this out. I thought about having the photo blown up, but I think it would become too skewed if enlarged.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Bonnie

Bonnie,

What is the stitch count for width and hight? I have a stitch converter so I might be able to give you some help. The size of canvas you are going to use will make a difference in the size of your finished piece. What count canvas are you wanting to use? I can convert for Canvas in 12, 14, 18 and 22 count.

It would also help to know which software you are using and the version number if known.

I've never actually tried enlarging patterns. I think I'll have to go try it and see what happens....

Hi Alice,

I used a stitch converter set at making an 18"x24" piece on 18 ct. It gave me 324 sts W x 432 sts H, with fabric size 22"x28".

But this is confusing to me. It doesn't help that I have the WORST math anxiety of anyone on this planet. I don't know what these numbers mean. I don't understand the concept of/relationship between a graph size and actual size.

After thinking about it more, I think I have to blow up my photo, which is currently 4x6. I think I should blow it up to 8.5x11 (and hope it doesn't skew), then buy PCStitch and run it through that. But, again, I don't understand how sizing works.

Thanks for your help.
