cross stitch mistake - hopeless situation?

My mother (honestly not me, my mother) has made a mistake with her cross stitch - she's started the design in the wrong place. Basically, she'll run out of room as she progresses towards one of the edges.

Can you get another piece of fabric and kind of stick it next to the existing edge to make one edge bigger, so you can then fit in the rest of the edge of the pattern in?

Has anyone ever done this with reasonable results? Any tips/advice gratefully received.

Thanks a lot, best regards from Robert.

Yes Robert i have Added cloth, to enlarge an embroidery, although my mistake was different. { when i started to create that piece i didn`t realize i will make so long ,, I bought the same kind of Canvass , than laid it so that about 6-7 cm Overlapped each other, i than used A basting stitch to keep them close togeher thah i made several rows of xst [from my intended pattern] through BOTH canvases , than later i could cut out the unused edges ,,, BEST of luck , it needs patience , but it CAN BE DONE mirjam

For future reference. I have made this sort of mistake in the past. What I do now, when I start a new project, is to find the center, and count out to the top right hand corner, where I start stitching. I measure how much cloth is available for framing. This sort of guarantees one does not make this sort of mistake. Jim.

However, added fabric will show if you have a pattern that shows the background fabric. If the pattern completely covers the fabric, then the seam will not be as visible.

If the Background isn`t covered with the Pattern stitches , advice your mother just to stit over the double cnavass with some randomaly Xst in the color of the canvass itself ,, mirjam

Umm, one last hing. If she'll have enough fabric to stitch the design, then it's easy to add fabric to facilitate the finishing or framing. Othewise, if it's on linen or aida - you just have to be careful in weaving them together. It can be done - but hopefully the join will be covered with stitching.

Generally, if not that much work has been done, most people would just start over....as it's difficult to have the addition look good. But very dependent on what she's stitching on - canvas is easier to expand than fabric.

Good luck, Ellice in NoVirginia
