cross stitch question

I have a cross stitch pattern that tells me "stitches per color not skeins. How can I figure how many stitches I can get out of a skein of floss.(DMC)8.7 yards

There is no single figure that you can use to calculate how many skeins you need. It depends on too many factors, one being how scattered the stitches are in the pattern, and this, into the indefinite future, will remain unknown. Assuming you are stitching at either 14 or 16 stitches per inch, you will get about 1850 stitches per skein of floss. If you have 11,665 stitches, you should recon on over 6 skeins, i.e 7 skeins. However, the number of stitches per skein can vary between about 1000 to about 2600. Jim.
