Easy Charting...sort of

Hi everyone,

I bumbled into a web page

formatting link
that tells how to chart a basic picture for knitting by using Photoshop 7 or Paintshop Pro. I tried it with a fairly complicated photograph, hoping to use the finished chart for needlepoint and it actually worked beautifully! Mind you, it's now going to take several hours more work to match the multitudes of colours and shading to my DMC colour card, but from what I can tell, this will eliminate those annoying confetti stitches and shades that have to be altered when I use my photo-to-chart program. It should also give me great detail. Maureen

Well, we'll just say I was over tired when I sent in my great discovery. lol I never actually thought of the symbols. Guess that was so obvious I missed it! (sigh) What I was thinking was that the colours were exact, as opposed to getting patches of purple in the hair, or orange on the faces etc. as is so common with the charting programs. And to actually see a 10X10 grid laid over my picture and be so perfect just kind of blew me away. Next I'll try gridding the photo, and do what you suggest. Maybe if I remove the program's grid, and use Photoshop's grid, ..........we'll see. If I accidently discover the way to do 'PERFECT' needlepoint, I'll let you know. :)

Have you tried darklilac.com? They also have a free charting site.

No, I wasn't even looking for what I found actually, but I'm one of those people who starts out looking for one thing, gets distracted by a thousand links, and winds up miles from where I originally started. lol

Hey Maureen,

Did you ever get the wording you wanted put into Japanese for the picture you are stitching for your Sensei? (good grief, that was a mouthful!) I noticed you are still working on the picture, I bet you will be happy when that one is finished :)

take care, L>No, I wasn't even looking for what I found actually, but I'm one of those

Hi Linda, I haven't got the little engraving made yet, but I do have the Japanese lettering. Now all I have to do is find a Japanese engraver who knows what he's doing! lol As for the picture I'm working on, yes, I'm STILL working on it. I actually put it away for a time hoping it would move faster once I picked it up again, but I was wrong. haha. It's still taking me forever. In fact, I think I'll pick it up again now and see how much I can knock off it tonight. :)
