We've talked about this before; I think Dianne even called me brave. The only advice I have is to not be afraid to try -- don't worry about trying to create something that is photo-realistic or what the stitching police might say about your efforts.
First order of business is to buy some cheap muslin and threads and if you don't have one, a book of how to do a variety of stitches.
