Floss for Men

I just had to laugh at this, because I went to a different Walmart today, (in Plymouth NH) and bought 258 more skeins. They made the staff scan each individually ( unlike the other walmarts I had been to), so four of us lined them all up so the girl could use the portable scanner on them all. It was fun, and the store was quiet (thankfully)!!.

When I got home, DH said he would have done the same ting if it was coax cable...........or ammo for his guns!!

Men!!!! They can be understanding in their own weird way!'

With mine it's golf balls. I'm sure if he found them on sale for 10c each, he'd think nothing of buying enough to fill the trunk.

A few months ago, Hancocks had DMC half-price, and after cruising the store to see if there was anything that interested him, he went back to the car and his book. He seemed rather amused that I was just grabbing handsful from the bins (no shopping list; I took colors that I use a lot of and MLI uses a lot of and Silver Lining uses a lot of), and was even more amused when I came out with a 12-foot receipt.

Of course, it's not HIS money, so he could afford to be amused.

Why do you need so much floss? mirjam

There are less and less local places to purchase floss so almost all my needlecraft purchases are done by computer these days. I'm also a collector/gatherer who enjoys walking into my craft room and having everything available for any craft project I want to do.

Since I don't work, I have lots of crafting time. My Mother was my craft teacher, so when I lost her earlier this year, I brought much of her craft supply home with me. I was her main caretaker, so I find myself with much more free time suddenly and continue stitching, quilting, knitting etc. for her as well as for myself.

Things are getting a bit out of hand in the craft room. Quilting takes a lot of space with all the fabric I have and scrapbooking is taking more space every day. Counted crossstitch is still one of my favorite things to do. I also collect books, especially mysteries, inspirational, crafting and reference books.

Back to the original question - why so much floss. I find just looking at floss makes me want to stitch something. Right now I probably have more than 4 complete sets of the DMC line and it is very comforting to know I can start any project I want without stopping to order supplies or running all over town hunting them down.

Le sigh. Even though I've already got a full set of DMC, I suppose it makes me nervous that one day I might run out and have to buy it here in Norway...for a little more than a DOLLAR a skein.

On the topic of "floss for men", DH's latest fascination is building teeny-tiny computers. The one he's got the parts coming in for is going to be about the size of a shoebox. The next one he's planning is going to fit into a mini-toolbox, including the screen and keyboard.

Where his little hobby intersects with mine is that the shoebox computer is going to be my dedicated craft computer that I keep my floss inventory on, and a full catalog of the old magazines that I have for easy reference.

And, I am embarrassed to admit, I find myself working up a quick plastic canvas 'tissue box cover' for the LCD monitor. Hopefully, that will keep little furry paws from gooping up the display when I'm not using it.

Snana Tova Moni , And Special thanks for the Elaborate and most interesting and clear explanation , We never had many Yarn and hanfcraft shops to begin with , than most of the few closed , and now others are opening . BUT i am very lucky , to have a threads and partly habedashery shop within 5 minutes walk from my house !!!!! than i can go to mid town [we are a mountain city] and there are now quite some threads who provide many threads floss etc,,,,, but prizes are a bit high ,,,, new here are also shops that sell everything bagged for 2 Shekels [ 1$= 4.5 -4.345 shekel =it chnages daily] . i tend to walk in such shops from time to time to see if i can find beads , ribbons threads etc..... but my main working materials i find either in the neighbourhood shop , or one in midtown .

My condolences for loosing your mother , i hope indeed that crafting and using her leftover materials will help you to remember all her wonderful spiritual gifts to you , May she rest in peace . Are you thinking to make a kind of memorial work for her ? I am sure you Work in your Home so don`t say , you don`t work. And creating things is a very hard work as well .... satisfying but also hard ... about the so called clutter please remember

I have decided long ago that i work with subjects not with materials ,,,,, thus i mostly starte wiuth what i have ,the lesser the better because it makes my creativity work overtime !!!! But we are all Different in what turns our creativity ,,thus BEST OF LUCK !!! mirjam

Becky your letter left me partly speechless ,,,,, A full set of DMC ???? what for ???? i buy a thread at a time when i need it ,,,, a color when i need it ,,,,i might not use a color in years ..... thus why hoard it ,,, i still have some praline threads from my Late mother who is already not here for many years ...... i use up threads that i have , .... There are two places that I can purchase floss (that I know of) here. One is about a mile down the road and the other is in Oslo, an hour away. Both of them charge 4 to 5 times more for floss than I am accustomed to paying, and do not carry every single color in the DMC lineup.

So, if I decide to start a new project, I have to rely on having a particular color myself...rather than venturing out to the shop downtown that might not even have the color I need.

I calculated the cost of buying locally and buying in the US (or elsewhere) and it *still* is cheaper to get floss from the US and have it shipped...even with the *huge* increase in shipping costs....even more so when it's a bulk purchase.

It would be nice to have the luxury of just popping down to the LNS and picking up a skein or two on an as-needed basis for a (to me, at least) reasonable price.

I've just bought, from the Philippines, a mostly complete set of Anchor floss for that very reason. It's not available in Norway, period. There are enough colors that I was missing for a major project that I couldn't convert easily to DMC that it was worth the bulk purchase despite the high overall cost.

And the last consideration is that my floss collection serves more than one person. My DH is slowly taking up the hobby and hasn't quite mastered the art of color substitution, although he's improving.

And what I went through about 20 years ago: every single place in the county that sold DMC was out of the color I needed, for weeks. I even had Mom looking for the floss for her own Christmas present without success.

Finally, we ordered from Herrschners the full set of DMC as my Christmas present, and I had permission to dip into it for just that one color.

Also, when I was working full-time, LNS closed before I could get there in the evening, so my only chance to get floss was on Saturday. If I had plans for Saturday, it had to wait till the next weekend. Not good if the project has a due date.

Waaaaahhhhh!!!!! I went into our Walmart to see what was there. They only had about 5-10 skeins left and they weren't on sale. Evidently our WM is greedy and didn't put them on sale... they just have never restocked any.

I have a full set, plus about 200 extra skeins. I have them because I live in the country and if I want to start a new project in the middle of the night or on a weekend, I know I have the colors on hand and I don't have to drive all the way to town for one skein.

Same here and since I have done that for years (replacing as used) one could say the price has really averaged down anyway. They were far cheaper per skein when I first had a full set of colours. I think in the 90s DMC added some mutant type colours and I added them too, one could buy a pack of them at reduced price so it seemed to make sense.

I had forgotten all about the sale ( since there was virtually no Walmart near us in Bedford, MA). WE swung by one as we left Sturbridge, MA (another super sale at Wrights...later), because I needed dog food. As we wandered through, I remembered the sale!! I couldn't see the carousel, so the ladies pointed it out to me, hiddden with other crafts.............and there they were in all their full glory. I only bought about 50, because DH was with me. They had the sense to "scan one, plus add the number"

. Here in New Hampshire, they demanded each skein be scanned individually. I was AT the "20 max" counter, and I had 265 skeins. I had bagged them in 25 ct bags, but management insisted they be scanned individually. Three employees and myself made great friends, as we lined them all up, so the lady could fast scan them!

In my case at least - I like to keep one of each colour in Anchor and DMC - and that`s a good 900 skeins! I STILL never seem to have the one I need urgently at any one time!

You should see the state of my computer room ( which goes under the name of "Diningroom") The trouble is that ever since it started getting untidy EVERYTHING gets dumped in there!!!

Today's the 20th anniversary of our trolley system, so they were giving free rides all day.

Not only did I get 474 skeins @ 10c, I also got a free trip out there (another $4 savings) :)

Well Pat , i have learned to make do with what i have ,, just out of curiousity i now opened my Molinee threads ,,, i have 2 blue , 1 red , 3 white Whole Skeins [which are to be used in a project i work on NOW, than i have 15 pieces of cardboard on which i rolled open[ed] skeins at least half are already spliced into 3 threads instead of the usual 6 ,,,,,,,, 10 are various varigated threads and 5 are black, brown + 3 different pinks, And that is all . In the moline i have more colors but at least half are AGES old ,,,, mirjam ps i use in my embroider sewing threads and `knitting` cottons as well ,,,,
