Grandmothers Crewel

I have posted the pic of my pillow on rctnp, it is now finished and made up.

I would still argue that it would fit in a modern room just as easily as an antiquey room, my room is more eclectic as I am surrounded by family pics on the walls and the furniture is plain white. Walls are the same blue as the piping on the pillow and the carpet is white.

So if you feel it is 'grandmotherly' - good for you, this great-grandmother likes it and could give a fig !

Now dear, none of us would know you are a grandmother or even a great grandmother unless you told us.

But that is a lovely pillow and I've pulled out an old Candamar crewel kit and am sorting floss.

Maybe DH can take me to the glasses place to get new glasses tonight.

It's stunning, Sheena. And I actually think the colors make it look quite modern. Congratulations!

Thank you. I believe crewel is ageless, having admired crewel drapes worked by the lady of the house in the 1920s in an old house near Halifax. They were as pretty today as they were then, a little faded but only just, the house had nice wide eaves.

That is absolutely gorgeous Sheena - you do such perfect work. It would go anywhere I think - and would look extremely nice in MY house. :-))

It's gorgeous. Much as we wouldn't seem likely to agree, I'm with you. It should be lovely wherever, even in a modern room.

Don't see anything particularly ageist about this pillow. The colors and pattern are quite dynamic, especially given the basic Jacobean design elements.

Did you design this yourself, or is it a commercial pattern? I don't remember.

Personally, just started my first crewel piece in many years - "Run, Rabbit, Run" from Phillipa Turnbull. Need to get my skills sharpened, and then it hopefully will be a shop model before coming home. Scroll down this page, if you're curious.

No, I didn't, it's a fairly recent Elsa Williams, came with everything, even the blue piping. I love doing crewel because of the freedom it offers and I hate to say, don't think I will do a kit again. I prefer to get a transfer, or trace, or sketch myself then pick colours/stitches as I go along. I found it somewhat irksome to keep checking the pattern and using what they wanted, just to be ornery I did change a couple of stitches.

Oh nice link, will investigate more ! I really like yours, plus the Elizabethan snails lol I told YOU, I don't want any more kits, you mustn't have heard me !!!!

Why do you insist on showing me things like this???? Not Fair !!!!!

These are beautiful.

I don't need anything else. I already have a bell pull from the same Elsa Williams collection as Sheena's pillow thats shoved to the back of my stash. I really don't want anything else. This time I mean it !!!

Why do you insist on showing me things like this???? Not Fair !!!!! lol

Oh mercy... while I fall into the category of beginner and absolutely terrified, I can think I can overcome my fear. Those are such lovely, light hearted yet classic pieces on the site you provided. I agree they would go well in virtually any home. Mine, like Lucretia's would be called eclectic. I've never tried crewel but know I'd love to learn. I am working on a x-stitch sampler that has some basic crewel work at the bottom. I've worked down to that point so now is the time to try my hand.

Thanks for sharing! Deb :-)
