I am back, just a little worse for the wear

Hello, I am a long time lurker and sometimes poster here in R.C.T.N. I've actually been reading for several years. I moved back to Illinois from Virginia in June, on Sept 15th we had a house fire. They have decided to total the house and build us a new one. But we lost our beloved 5 year old cat, Alex. We have had him and his sister Nicki from the time they were born. He died from smoke inhalation. She was left in shock and with second and third degree burns on three of her paws. We spent two weeks in a hotel and have now moved into temporary housing to await the re-building of our home. We have lost every thing but like my Husband says " it's just stuff and it can be replaced. At least we have each other and at least one of the cats. " We were not in the house when it burned thank Goodness but our cats were I can only imagine what Nicki must have gone through. She is much better now her feet have healed and she only has a barely noticeable limp.

My Stash is also gone, floss, charts, half finished projects, my once beautiful work basket with tools from my Grandmother in it all my little stork scissors and all my little gadgets I have collected since the 70s when I started to stitch. Also a big box of cross stitch magazines many of them British. Since I do love them so much with their large pictures and color charts. I guess my question is this. " Where do I start to rebuild my stash? Do I buy floss, or books or kits or tools first? The insurance guy had no idea what all my stuff was worth and he wrote if off with a check for $75 Dollars. What a joke

The worst part is the fact that just a week before. We were moving our belongings out of a storage place to our house and my box of Christmas ornaments fell off the back of the truck. I pulled off the road but right behind me were several huge grain trucks and I had to stand there and watch them run over memories from the very first Christmas I spent on my own. By the time they went by and I could gather the bits and pieces I had only 6 that I could save. I cried but then I thought maybe this is Gods way of making me get rid of my old memories and give me a boost to make new memories with my husband. So I had started making new ornaments, Of course that all burned too. (Sigh) So does anyone have any easy ornaments I could make?

On the question of making ornaments, the "middle" part of may doily patterns make good ornaments. For crocheters, that is.

Wow, you have been through the wringer. {{{{{{{Amber}}}}}}}

Haunt thrift stores, and see how much you can pick up for a song in terms of stash and Christmas ornaments. My first Christmas married, I was able to find the exact set of glass ornaments everyone in the family had for a whopping 50c. (And good thing I only paid 50c for the set, because the damn cats knocked the tree over repeatedly and broke half of them!)

Send me your address and I'll send you some starter stash. What you don't like, you can trade away for stuff you do like.

I would tell everyone that for Christmas, you want gift certificates to places like NN, Herrschners, LNS, etc. If they don't want to give you a gift certificate, then give them the info on Herrschners' complete set of DMC, and tell them to buy that for you. It's like $130, and a darn good start to rebuilding. They also have a complete set of Anchor.

If you had any MLI charts in your collection, e-mail her with a list and offer proof of the fire and she will replace them for you.

My sympathies - but your husband is right - try to focus on the positive. Same as Karen, if you will email me at snipped-for-privacy@gmail.com I am happy to send you some stash. I have quite a collection, I have moved to a condo with limited space and find I am doing a fraction of what I used to do, so you would actually be doing me a favour !

Amber -

Let us know a bit about what kind of stitching you like. I am sure many of us have items in our stash we can pass along.

And to add to the others, email me and I'll be happy to share. I need to give my stash a good weed out anyways. At the very least I know I've got more 'tools' than any stitcher can use at one time! Heather in NY

Me, too! Email me your address and I'll be happy to share some stash. However, also let us know when you'll be ready for it. Seems that if you're in temp housing, you might not want it all *today.* Maybe when you get to something more settled we can set you up!

Also, I'd also be happy to send an ornament to you to jump-start your collection for this season! Let me know where to send it!

I'm so sorry you had such misery, but great news that you're okay and it will get better.

Please don't hesitate to let us know what you would be happy with. I'm sure lots of us would be willing to put some of our overstuffed stash supply up for adoption to a good home.

First off, (((((((Amber & DH & Nicki)))))))

Add me to the list of names willing to help you out! I have chunks of fabric, both aida & linen, some of which would be very good for ornaments.

What sort of patterns do you like? I could certainly part with some of mine.

Is there any way you could renegotiate on the cost of supplies? I'm sure any lns would be happy to help you figure out a more reasonable settlement, or at least verify that what they gave you was pitifully (and insultingly) little.

I am so sorry for your losses!

I am in possession of the remnants of a swap box which still has a ton of nice stuff in it, mostly patterns. And I have more stash of my own than I'll ever get to. If you would give us examples of what you like and email an address, I'm sure among the bunch of us we can give you a nice start on rebuilding your stash.

Amber,

Hugs go to you!!!

I will be back home tomorrow, and will send a small package out to you next week. I have oodles of DMC floss ( thanks to Walmart's 10cent sales) and also some fabric, needles and charts which you might like. There might even be a UK magazine that I am done with; not too sure about the latter, since we have been away from home for 5 1/2 months!

I think this great group will get you back on the road to sanity and stash!

Good to hear you are on the way home, though Lucille tells me it is still hot as hell with thunderstorms Florida way. Oddly enough, it is still very warm here too but rain and wind are finally putting paid to the leaves today.

Happy Landings !
