Hi, I'm making a ruffle (single layer) for an umbrella, to go where the post meets the canopy. I can iron the pattern into the nylon but it doesn't come out crisp, with well defined edges. I'm now thinking about using fabric stiffener, before ironing, and am wondering which one to use. (It needs to be water proof.) I'd appreciate your thougths? Thanks, John

Oh, dear! I'm not sure of one that is waterproof. A pellon iron-on would act as a nice stiffener. You can get that from lightweight to a heavier weight. I would go to a fabric store, read labels on bolts, ask the retail help about waterproof iron-on facing. Water won't "bead" off Pellon, but it is made for stiffening cuffs and collars in washable garments.

If you can't find waterproof stiffener, you might find a spray can of stuff used to waterproof cloth sneakers and spray the stiffener after it has been ironed on. If the umbrella gets frequent use, you'll probably have to periodically re-apply the spray since that's what I used to do with my shoes.
