Linen Thread

I have a couple of hers to do - in the stash - the recent flip-flop ones, and a really cute one with bath signs - I thought for the crazy DSIL.

I love the picture. I think it could also work using flower thread for the alphabet with regular DMC for the silhouette. Liz from Humbug - who's been doing the kind of stump work involving a splitting mall and is going to spend the evening sitting in DH's recliner (he works swing shift) and staring at the TV. :-)

I believe she's talking about splitting firewood. (Took me a couple of minutes to figure it out myself!)

Isn't a wood fired stove the best! I miss mine sometimes - lots of labor, but it was so cozy. I'd stoke up the fire first thing, load it and damper down just before leaving for work and it would still be cozy when I got home.

We just miss our nice wood fireplace, even. In the new place we have a double sided gas - so when the sun-room is usuable I'll have the fireplace, and lots of sun. At least we had a circualting fan put in, and that actually helps push some heat out - but it's not the same as a real wood fire.

I was looking into converting our fireplace into gas, and it was too expensive. I always used to think that gas was "cheating," but having tried it at rental places and a friend's house, there's something to be said for an on/off switch! We've not been able to do a wood fire in ages because of DD's asthma - and when she went off to college, that's one of the things I most looked forward to. And also, we rarely have anyone sitting in the living room for any length of time to make the fire worthwhile...I always feel like if it's there, I should be in front of it and not off watching TV in the family room!

I find having a real wood fire very cheering -- it's nice to do it after several days of a cold rain -- it cheers me up, and also helps the room feel less damp.

We have a gas starter in our fireplace, which is rather nice, but I do love a real wood fire.

I know the feeling. In the house in ABQ, we put in a special ultra-hi temp fireplace in the family room. It burned everything down to a thimble of ash, and could heat the entire main floor - including the cathedral ceiling LR/DR. But it also required special flues, fireboxing. Was the best of the wood world - close to no mess. But, the XDH insisted that we have a wood fp in the MBr/Sitting room - it was a 3sided fp - so we could see it from either side. The only saving grace was having a small deck off the sitting room so that we could put wood out there. But, carting the wood upstairs in the carpeted house, kind of a mess.

My mother always said she didn't like fps in the lr because then you'd get soot, dirt on the "nice" stuff. So, AFAIK, we always had them in a a den or family room. There is something to be said for the convenience of the on-off switch. And they gave us some extra stuff to throw in there - long life glowing embers stuff. And it does stay clean - but we do miss the wood scent.

We're planning - tee hee - hoping the floors are done, etc - an housewarming for Dec 9. You'll get the invite - if you feel up to the drive. I think last time we went to Baltimore it took not too much more than an hour - from us we went up 15 to 70 and then in. You can come and see the fp!
