making a skirt

Hi, Many umbrella's have a little skirt, were the canopy meets the post. Some seems to be just a round piece nylon with with a hole in the centre, and folds. (I assume ironed in, in order to make them somewhat conical, like a skirt) Others are more elaborte with folds sewn in, in order to get the same shape. Does anyone have an idea as to how to make either of these?

Thanks,

John

Cut it like a Whole circle Closh skirt ,,,, Fold material in length than in width , make a nice 1/4 circle line cut ... make the closh radius length +small seam , don`t iron as usualyy materials used for umbrelas shouldn`t mirjam

Hmm- I missed the original post about this.

How about a fabric "yo-yo"? Just Google it - there are plenty of explanations out there!

Just cut a circle and put a hole in the exact center to fit over the center rod of the umbrella. You will see that it will ripple and not sit flat. You would then make darts to make it sit flat on the under fabric of the umbrella.

Since your umbrella is shaped and not flat, the circle will just do what you want it to because it will be on the bias and just naturally fall the way you want it to.

Here's a website that will show you how to cut the circle.

Hi Lucille, Any of the one's I've seem are pleated, and not tacked to the umbrella. I suppose I could tack it though. Good idea. Thanks for the reference. John

That's an intriguing idea Cheryl. If I get the gist - you make a runny stitch hem around the outside, then put the stitch untill you get the shape you want? John

I think so - a friend makes tons of them for quilts and such.
