More Sewing Help on the cycling theme

Hello All,

I am delurking with a request for advice. I have began cycling to work recently and would like to make myself some overshorts to wear on my regular

10km ride.

I have been experimenting with various pairs of shorts and trousers over the top of my padded shorts. Each pair is okay but the seams are twisting outwards as I peddle making for a tight and constrictive feeling at the top oif the leg. I am a size 18 and my lower half is not my best features.

Can someone please suggest whether there is a pattern (with wide cut leg perhaps) or material that I should be looking for as the basis for my shy shorts (as they are known in Australia)?

The weather is getting quite warm and wearing tracksuit pants or sweats isn't confortable at all.

Thank you in advance for your help,

Catherine - peddling in Melbourne,. Australia

There are commercial shorts (intended for mountain biking) with a technical liner attached to nylon baggies. Try an upscale bike shop to see examples. I have a pair, and haven't noticed any seam creep. Would be easy enough to make. (An advantage os making two unattached pieces would be evident in the laundry room.)

Also, visit the long thread about skorts and so on. I think that was on here in October.

You know about Terry's bike skirt overwraps? Seems like they are way overpriced for what they are: a light nylon skirt to wear over shorts.

HTH. Happy summer!

A lot of folks just opt for a cheap hiking nylon cargo short over their cycling shorts. I would bet that the seam twist is due to not enough movement ease at the top of the thigh. I've made nylon shorts just for this purposet ( riding) and I did slash-and-spread right at the hipline/top of the thigh to have enough ease for movement. It took a few versions before I got it right. Another alteration you might want to make is to raise the waistband in the back, and lower it a few inches in the front so it doens't dig into your tummy.

I make almost all my own cycling clothes....
