there is a current demand for such shirts as I found out yesterday in a designer shop I need the Grandad Shirt to go with a Suit I am having made

I would be very grateful if anyone can help or point me to a website with details of patterns in contemporary styles

Please tell us what a Grandad Shirt is and what is different from a regular man's shirt? DB became a Grandad this spring and I'm sure he'd like one for his birthday which is rapidly approaching. That would make a great gift for me to make him for his 60th if it is different. Emily

it is not on the net Ursula I found it in a shop and I can supply you with one if you like I am buying 1 of 2 patterns on Tuesday

for all others wondering what a Grandad Shirt is, a Grandad Shirt doesn't have a collar like other shirts, as in one that is triangular, but the triangular part is missing...

I did a google search just now, its just a plain old mandarin collar, you can get a pattern from simplicity. I have one for men and one on a jacket for women, or you can just draft your own.

Not quite... 'Granddad' shirts have a collar band that you fix a separate starched collar to, using old fashioned collar studs. The band is quite narrow and soft. Shirts for wearing with Nehru jackets have an attached collar stand that is taller and stiffer. They usually button under a placket so the buttons are hidden from view. A mandarin collar meets at the CF, but does not overlap.

Thanks, Michelle, after I was in bed last night, where I do my best thinking sometimes, I happened to remember the nehru jackets/shirts and wondered if that what it was. I have both a man's nehru suit and shirt pattern that I used in the late

60s to make DS a suit and a shirt. I, too, have a suit pattern for myself, bought and used a couple times in 68-69. The shirt pattern will be simple to alter to DB's size. Thanks again, Emily

Or use a pattern that has a separate stand for the collar -- which is *much* easier to make than a collar and stand all conglomerated together -- and just leave off the collar.
