Marking on felt?

I'm making little red felt stocking ornaments for the "select" group of people at work & would like some input on what other people have found to work well to mark the felt so I can cut it out. The stockings are about 4 1/2 by 2 and the tops of one side will have their name stitched on it. I may be crazy for starting this but I'm thinking it will go pretty quickly - ONCE I CUT THEM OUT!!!!!! :-)) I actually have to cut out twice the number I'm making so I can stitch the name on one side and then blanket stitch the two sides together. I have about three weeks to put them together because people will probably start to be laid off (for the season) by the 17th of Dec.

Sooooo, pencil? pen? felt pen? I tried one of those white, water soluble fabric marking pencils but it didn't show very well. Maybe I'll sharpen it and try again. :-) I have about 20 to make, which means I have to draw 40 of them and cut them out.

Thanks in advance for the input & Happy Thanksgiving for all for whom it's appropriate. :-) Liz from Humbug

I would cut them out in one piece with a fold down the back. Then you would only have to blanket stitch down the front and sole of the stockings. You can put the names on before you seam them.

I would make a cardboard template and either draw round it with a biro on the wrong side of the felt or cut round the template with a rotary cutter. If you use the rotary cutter you could cut more than one at once. Hugs Shirley

Well, duh!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If I'm only making one or two of something, I simply pin a paper pattern and cut it out but a cardboard template would certainly make things much easier!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks, I'll see if DH has any chalk anywhere. The combination of cardboard and chalk should have those stalking zipping out in no time. Thanks to both of you! (Karen C for the chalk & Shirley) :-)

If you cannot find chalk, a sliver of dried out leftover soap would also work. I always keep one in my cutting out drawer, it works like a charm on wools.

Wouldn't making a paper (or pellon) pattern work to your advantage? Since it's thick felt, I wouldn't cut more than two at a time.
