OFF TOPIC I'm passing this law at my house

I'm not offended by the fact that you hate dogs, although I find it peculiar because I love dogs and IMHO dogs are people too.

However, dogs respond to love more than any other animal I can think of and even the sweetest dog has been known to turn on its owner when abused. If your trained beast picked up on your hatred I wouldn't trust it with my kids. Wouldn't it be easier and kinder for you to just walk your kids to school yourself? You've already said you could use the exercise.

I'm a cat person. ;)

That's a good point and one I hadn't thought of because, unfortunately, dogs really really like me. LOL

No, really, I think you just decided me in the negative. You know, sometimes you just have these ideas that seemed really good at the time...

Bizarrely, it is the parents objecting to uniforms more than the kids; guess they figure they lose status points because everyone is in Dockers and polos and no one knows they buy the kids stuff at (fill in status shopping venue).

Groups are better than singles and you just get together with the other Moms to watch the parade.

Since dogs aren't the answer do you think maybe you could train a cat to be a guard cat? . If you got a big, sturdy one maybe it could be taught to hiss at strangers like some other cats I've known, it might just work for you.

I know a hissing cat makes me go off in the other direction rather quickly.

Oh, well I don't like that at all. I don't mind a little experimentation along around 14 or so, but little girls? No. I balk at any hint of a whiff of a possibility of tarting up a prepubescent girl.

(Now, if only *I* had the body to tart myself up, that'd be different!)

One Mom of a buddy of DD's let her get blonde streaks, acrylic nails, the whole nine yards - for her 7th birthday - looked like beauty contestant. Saw nothing wrong, but I decided that was one friendship that wasn't going to last.

All the kids - boys and girls - show up with color once in a while. DD and DS have such dark hair it doesn't show at all!

Thursday night was the school "carnival". I don't think the nail polish made it home on at least 3 fingers. C

Ummm, not meaning to be nasty, but if you really HATE dogs, you might want to think twice about this. If you can't have some bond of emotion with it, and hate it, the plan might not work as the dog will be constantly wanting your approval, etc. Most of the working/herding dogs really do their work and want recognition, and that ends with being praise and love (pets, hugs, etc). I can't speak for the weather where you are, but from my research, the current vet preference is not to have dogs living outside all the time. They can be out for periods in a yard, but are best healthwise being indoors a lot. Our dog, who will retrieve, is fine as a warning guy in the house. My previous dog, a border collie/lab mix was a fabulous herding dog. And loved playing, herding the neighborhood children. Plus, he listened very well. You might consider a border collie, or Australian shepherd. They're smart and loyal, and not too big.

But, I guess what I would say is that IME, dogs sense emotion and if you resent the dog, this might not work out as well as you would like.

It's an interesting thought you have.

Didn't mean to beat a dead horse, so to speak. Just catching up on the group, and as you likely know, being a dog person (well, there are few animals I don't like, maybe just not a snake fan particularly) it just strike me that you might be doing yourself, and the pup an injustice. Not that it would harm you or the kiddies, just the picture of unhappiness potential.

I'm sure you'll come up with some kind of solution for the walk to school.

And some dogs are brighter than others: Three handsome male dogs are walking down the street when they see a beautiful, enticing, female poodle. The three male dogs fall all over themselves in an effort to be the one to reach her first, but end up arriving in front of her at the same time. The males are speechless before her beauty, slobbering on themselves and hoping for just a glance from her in return. Aware of her charms and her obvious effect on the three suitors, she decides to be kind and tells them, "The first one who can use the words 'liver' and 'cheese' together in an imaginative, intelligent sentence can go out with me." The sturdy, muscular black lab speaks up quickly and says, "I love liver and cheese." "Oh, how childish," said the poodle. "That shows no imagination or intelligence whatsoever." She turns to the tall, shiny golden retriever and says "How well can you do?" "Um. I HATE liver and cheese," blurts the golden retriever. "My, my," said the poodle. "I guess it's hopeless. That's just as dumb as the lab's sentence." She then turns to the last of the three dogs and says, "How about you, little guy?" The last of the three, tiny in stature but big in fame and finesse, is the Taco Bell Chihuahua. He gives her a smile, a sly wink, turns to the golden retriever and the lab and says "Liver alone. Cheese mine."

Good news. My dd does NOT want her bra straps showing (hallelujah!) with her tanks (hey, it's Missouri - in June, July, August & September, they are practically required if you are going to step outside!). She owns one or two spaghetti strap tops (long, modest in the neckline). Bad news - have you tried to find a strapless bra for young girls? What she really needs is a bandeau kind of thing - sort of a cupless sports bra, as almost anything with a cup is too big for her. Trying to find one, though, is a challenge! Four stores down, two to go, then online shopping. . .
