OT: Czech Language help

Hi Guys, OK, I already posted that I am tagging along with DH (he's going on business) to Europe next week. I am trying to find a site online that will give me translations for the basic language niceties -- stuff like please, thank you, you're welcome, hello, good-bye... I have Googled English-Czech dictionary and have found a site that will give you the translation. Problem is, I have NO IDEA how to actually pronounce the words! Czech, like many European languages, has different pronunciation "thingies" that don't mean a thing to MOI. I need something that will give me VERY BASIC phonetic translations. I could make the 20 mile trip to the closest Barnes & Noble but that means taking pretty much a whole day to go in the opposite direction of all the other errands I have to run this week! So -- does anyone speak Czech; do you have any idea what these words would be and how to pronounce them; can you recommend a website that would have the info I need? I'm sure that most folks in the Czech Rep. will know what the English please, thank you, etc. are but I just think that's so rude -- to expect people in their own country to understand my language! By now the whole world knows & uses OK and most people know what you mean when you say Hi or Bye but I should at least learn a few basic words in the local language! I should also have worried about this when I first learned I was going with DH but was busy with life, etc.! No excuse on my part so any and all help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks & CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Now google for English-Czech dictionary + pronunciation!

I have a CD-ROM of "Languages of the World", the most essential basics in dozens of languages. If you'd given me more advance notice, I could've tossed it in the mail to you.

Got your e-mail and the only problem is that there are apparently grammar &/or gender issues to deal with -- I think. I'll try to Google the way you suggest and see what happens. What I REALLY hope happens is that DH's contact over there will take pity on me *IF* he remembers to ask her to send the translations spelled phonetically :-). CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Y'know what? They will be so tickled that an American is trying to speak Czech that they will completely overlook if you use the wrong form of the word. They KNOW it's not the most common language for Americans to learn, so they won't expect you to be perfect.

Babelfish can sometimes be funny and can produce the most interesting word combinations - be careful what comes out of it, the meaning often is completely distorted and wrong, because the program only works on words but can't think. Sometimes it is correct.

But it can't to Czech.

This site does it - but >> Got your e-mail and the only problem is that there are apparently

dto. As long as the meaning is correct.

It is a difficult language too.

-- that has all the stuff I was interested in -- words, phrases, even stuff on signs, etc. AND has .wav files so I got to hear how the words are pronounced! I'm happy as a pig in excrement and have printed out all sorts of fun stuff. I even had the forethought (that's similar to foreskin only different) to write down *my* phonetic spelling so that I could practice when I'm not at the 'puter :-). I'm happy, Happy, HAPPY!!! No, No, No -- it's almost ahoy but really more like a-ho-ee (like I'm an expert already, right -- LOL). I tried all night to get DH to say that eeeee sound and all I got was ahoy like he thinks he's Popeye or something!!! I told him to just say Hi -- most people with a tv know what Hi means -- same as ciao and OK :-). CiaoMeow >^;;^<
