I have a similar recipe. I've made it with a whole-wheat crust and plain yogurt substituted for sour cream (back in the days before fat-free sour cream was in my local grocery store). I like the "zing" plain yogurt gave it.

That's basically it, but I put vanilla in the sour cream, and no cinnamon, and make a flour, white sugar, cinnamon and butter crumble to put on top. (3 are cooling in various parts of the dining room--3 pumpkin with sour cream spiderweb patterns on top are in the oven right now. I like to bake the pies "the day of", so started peeling apples at 7 am). My practice husband's father was Mennonite (lots of Mennonites in Saskatchewan) and I got the "gist" of his mother's cooking from talking to him and from The Mennonite Cookbook, printed in Altona, Manitoba. ( He got his second DIL to ask me how to make green bean soup, as even with the cookbook she didn't get it) Dawne

The carrots and raw cabbage are actually quite good in lemon Jello. Sweet and crunchy (and is a good way to get veggies into children!).

What commercial was it that had "Tryyyy it...you'll liiiike it!" ?

Joan

Wasn't that part of an antacid commercial, Bromo Seltzer or Alka Seltzer? Lucille

The Mormons like red Jello with (ick. ack. ptui.) cottage cheese. My SIL mixed up some strawberry Jello, some strawberry CoolWhip, and some strawberries. Just a bit too much strawberry, particularly since she didn't make the Jello according to the recipe on the box, but mixed the powder into the Cool Whip. But then, my SIL is passing strange, anywho.

Dawne, my childhood parish (St Anselm of Canterbury) had a spaghetti supper every year for quite some while, but I don't recall what part of the year that was. And, of course, the pre-Lent pancake supper (Shrove Tuesday, IIRC).

Mama Mia, that was one spicy meatball!

Alka Seltzer

Was that Mikey ?

I always liked "You'll wonder where the yellow went when you brush your teeth with Pepsodent, Pepsodent"

Wow oh Wow--The things we remember!! I'm not sure that's a good thing when I can't remember yesterday, but I can remember stupid commercials. :-S

Lucille

Sometimes though, no short term memory is a good thing. Now did I remember to do the housework ??? I think so.

I love 'Newfie' sayings! A friend of mine came out with a few cute ones recently: "Have a wee drop ...you might's well be drunk as the way you is!" "Be nice now, don't be yourself!"

Mavia

I like it! I know a couple people to say that to!

You know, I've never met a Newfie I did not instantly like, great people.

I agree! My all time favorite holiday was a trip across Newfoundland staying at B&Bs all the way! I met the most wonderful, friendly people!

Mavia

I drove my uncle and aunt to Newfoundland one year and we did the same, it was a memorable holiday that's for sure. We went up to Gros Morne and at Rocky Harbour we chatted to a fisherman who, to us, spoke in broad Devon. When we asked him where he came by his accent we found out that in that area all are descended from Devonshire fishermen who came to Newfoundland and stayed. It just seemed so strange to stand there, in Newfoundland, listening to someone speaking in broad 'Devon' lol He even said "Me 'andsome"

Sounds like my Mum, Dawne. Cabbage and Brussells sprouts had to be boiled to within an inch of their lives, then drained and squashed down in the pan with a plate or saucer to get every bit of water out! Dad refused to touch salt (mind you, he lived to be 89) or any kind of sauce or condiment - or onion. When he lived with us for a while I had to make cottage pie without onion just for him. What a pain! As for curry or chilli - I think they would both have died on the spot if I had ever presented them with those!

Tales of a Misspent Childhood :)

I have a CD of old commercial jingles. My childhood best friend and I sang along with the whole hour-plus without missing a word.

Close, but that went something like "You try it" "No, you try it" "No you try it" "I know, let's let Mikey try it. He hates everything." " Hey Mikey....."

Dawne

Mauybe not a GOOD thing, Lucille, but there are a lot of us about!!! ;-)) Mind you - there are some really PECULIAR ads on these days. With half of them you can`t even make out what they`re advertising!!! Has anyone seen that new one with all those Oriental ladies caressing what look like glowing, transparent, oddly shaped hot water bottles? Last year it was the giant, glowing, floating jellyfish being towed around by Oriental cowboys!!!

Whatever they`re advertising - I`m sure I wouldn`t want any!
