What machine to buy for my Mother? Need advice

The past year or two I have been very fortunate with some investments I have made so I would like to buy my 77 year old Mother a new sewing machine. Every Saturday morning she watches several sewing & quilting shows on cable TV. I buy a new computer every year and I always give her my old sytems so she is fairly computer savvy ( don't ever challenge her to a game of Spider Solitaire). On a couple of the Saturday morning sewing shows they feature different sewing machines that use a computer & printer with the machine.My Mother does have a bit of arthritis in her hands so she needs a machine that doesn't require a lot of changing out small parts etc. The three machines she always comments on when she watches these shows when I am there are the computerized sewing machine system, something called a surger and the computerized quilt stitching machine. I don't mind spending several thousand dollars for good equipment for her but I don't want something that will require service or repairs constantly. Any suggestions about brands and models from anyone? She spends at least 20 hours a week on her old machine now but I know if she had better equipment it would make it more enjoyable for her.

I won't make any brand recommendations because I use a machine older than myself and don't do much machine sewing. I would, however, recommend that you look closely at what machine supplies and accessories are available locally; the store might have the base model in stock but require weeks/months to order add-ons. Make certain someone in the area is capable of servicing any brand you buy. While a new machine isn't likely to need service for quite some time, it could happen and she probably doesn't want to tear the system apart, crate it up, and send it off. For the fancy systems that connect multiple machines to a computer you will probably want to buy from a store that will do the full installation for her and teach her the basics of the new system at her house. If they won't train at home, they should at least include free, local classes to get her started. You also need to have firm measurements and layout of her sewing room in mind to make sure everything will fit in the room and be accessible.
