Did you see Bob McDonald on the national last night, he explained there will have to be more 'big ones' because Haiti sits directly on the smallest plate which is being crushed by the north and south plates which are huge, moving towards each other.

Knew about the plates already - there is a section of the US - the New Madrid Fault that is due for a big one.

Yep. People thought they were safe living in Missouri. And since they haven't quake-proofed their houses like we Californians, there are going to be a lot of people who get hit on the head with canned goods or books bouncing off unsecured shelves.

One of the problems about an earthquake around the New Madrid Fault is what the houses are built on. In California there is a lot of rock; it makes sense to have foundations that resist earthquakes. However, I believe that in a place like Memphis, there is very little rock. The ground, in event of an earthquake, would just liquify. So it is difficult to build earthquake proof foundations. Jim.
