OT: I found a great new trilogy

So am I the last person in the world to find and read the first book in Naomi Novik's trilogy about dragons? I just read "His Majesty's Dragon" and now am getting ready to start "Throne of Jade". I've fallen in love with Temeraire and Lawrence. It's light enough to make me chuckle occasionally, and yet serious enough to be a good read. I've moved away from reading fantasy so much lately, unless it's of the undead variety and find this series has renewed my interest a bit. Anyone know of any similar types of books? I've read most of the Pern books, although I noticed today there is a new one out.

Tegan (who just couldn't resist adding to Cheryl's "To Read" list.. especially since it's too friggin' hot to stitch!)

Hey Tegan,

Are you familiar with Jo Walton's work?

I enjoyed Eragon and Eldest by Christopher Paolini.

Also fun reads are Simon R. Green's books. All of them. Hawk and Fisher, the Deathstalker books, another series that I can't grasp right now. These are science fiction rather than fantasy but humorous. Which reminds, time to do another search for an OOP book of his called Shadows Fall.

Mmm. Thanks a lot. You've added to my list, too. Haven't been disappointed yet in anything you've recommended. So as soon as I finish "The Historian"....

The name sounds familiar, Elizabeth, but I'm not sure if it's because of previous book discussions or because I may have read something of hers. I'll have to go look her up and see which. So far this morning I haven't been able to read much thanks to a very attention demading cat.

I read Eragon and adored it, but for some reason, I couldn't get Eldest going. I may have to dig it out and try again. I don't know what the difference was, but I just couldn't get started on it. And yes, I loved Hawk and Fisher. I haven't read any of the Deathstalker books, but I might just give them a try. I don't mind science fiction, if there's humor involved. And have you read ... (something.. can't remember first name) Greenwood's ... well... heck... can't remember what the series is called, either. Hang on, let me go look....aha.. it's Ed Greenwood and his "Band of Four" series. It reminds me a bit of Hawk and Fisher in tone.

So where does one start?

You really needed to get past the first 75 pages or (as a friend told me) have just finished Eragon. After plodding, it really takes off!

Oh, yes, Sherri Tepper. 'The Family Tree' should be the first one you read.

I've read a fair bit of Tepper. I'll go looking for The Family Tree too!

I've read quite a few of hers, too, but The Family Tree is my favorite.

That's a hard one, she has written so much good stuff! Grass, Beauty, Raising the Stone, Gateway to Women's Country, Six Moon Dance....

Well, I've read Gateway to Women's Country, Beauty and I *think* I've read Grass. Liked them all. Also read A Plague of Angels and right now I'm reading Shadow's End. They've all been good and I wouldn't hesitate to say 'Yes, read that one' if asked.

But, still, the very first one I'd recommend is The Family Tree. :)
