OT: KATRINA, Gillian & Olwyn Mary

Hi Guys, I just checked Gillian's location and he location is 21.6 miles SE of Greenville, TX. Since there haven't been any reports of really bad weather in Texas, I am assuming she and her DH are OK. From the looks of video from New Orleans, I don't think Olwyn Mary and her DH will have been so lucky. Of course, I have NO personal info but her home has to be flooded at best. I am sure that she & her DH are physically OK but I won't be at all surprised to eventually learn that they stayed at the Super Dome. She was in walking distance (at least for those with better knees than me) from the Hilton that is on The Mississippi. DH says he saw video of the Hilton and one side -- most likely the one facing the river was missing just about all of the windows all the way to the top. Because the buildings in Olwyn Mary's section of New Orleans are really close together, she probably has all of her windows. the flooding, OTOH, doesn't care how close buildings are. VBS -- I hope when she finally is able to contact her family, she asks them to post to RCTN so we know for sure that she and her DH are OK. I have her phone number and I will keep trying it but I don't hold out much hope! When I tried last evening, there was **nothing** but dead silence. I was on my cell and I am certain that all the towers are gone so I will try on my regular land line. I am looking at more video of N.O. and The Super Dome. The city is a lake. The only roads visible are the elevated ones. Cars are slowly

*floating* down streets. Now I KNOW that Olwyn Mary's home is flooded. I just hope they are safe. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Don't you just love that tracking software that Gillian's DH has! I've loved following their journeys - even the local ones.

As to Olywn Mary - I pray she and her husband left town and got as far away as they could.

I've been very worried about her, too. Since reports are that 80% of New Orleans is under water and it is still rising in some places, I sure hope they decided to go to the 'Dome.

A friend of a friend, whom I met when I went to New Orleans the last time, decided to stay in his apartment near Lake Pontchartrain. The last we heard from him was a voicemail yesterday morning where he said he decision to stay was a very big mistake. Haven't heard anything since (he only has a cell phone), but we are very concerned.

My source in Pensacola says she has power at work, but not at home. Her home is just a mile or two from Needle Delights.

I cannot get hold of a stitching friend in Mississippi. Gulf Coast News reports there's not a house or business in that area that didn't have some damage, power is out, and the only communication is cell phones. Her cell company is giving me a recording "due to the hurricane in the area you're trying to call...."

If you have a number for a land line phone, try that. Since so many of the phone lines are buried, they make it through these storms better than cell towers! That's how I reached Olwyn Mary -- my land phone to hers!! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Karen C - California had some very interesting things to say about Re: OT: KATRINA, but NOT Gillian & Olwyn Mary:

Blame your children. :-)

(For everyone else's reference, Karen's cats are Emilie and Katherine. Considering that two of the worst hurricanes this year were Emily and Katrina......)

I've been trying both. The landline rings once and that's it. The cell phone at least gives me the recording "due to the hurricane..."

For as irked as Kitty was that Emilie got to be a hurricane and she didn't, she's now pointing out that Katharine is not the same as Katrina. As in "not me!"

My friend who swears that if she knows someone by that name, the hurricane hits them real bad, is getting antsy, because the next one has her XH's name. With the devestation the XH wreaked on her life, she's positive that "his" hurricane will land her in Oz, or worse.

Great news that Olwyn is OK. Terrible news otherwise.

Bad form to reply to my own post, but GulfCoastNews.com is reporting NO landline service and only spotty cell service in the area I'm trying to reach.

HOWEVER, if you're worried about someone in the So.Mississippi area, GCN is setting up a database which should be available by this evening. You give them name/address/etc. and as access is possible, they will go out to the neighborhoods and try to contact them F2F. There's also a message board on the GCN site where you can post inquiries and/or information.

SunHerald.com also covers the So.Mississippi area.

Two of the casinos (which by law must be on barges) have moved inland, to the middle of major thoroughfares. Gives new meaning to the phrase "floating crap game" :)

Kitty would be wrong about that. Katrina is certainly a variant of Katharine, just as Isobel is a variant of Elizabeth, and Hannah is a variant of Anne.

At least my kids are well-behaved (Felix appears on the 2007 name list, Ava appears on none). :-)

I say in this case, the name fit, given Kitty's personality (and yes, Katherine and Katrina are basically the same name, Kitty).

Guys are nowhere near as vicious as women can be. :-)

I'm telling you, I didn't do it. That was someone else who made that big wet mess. Emilie, yeah, SHE makes big wet messes all the time. I'm neat and tidy and a proper lady cat.

The Lady Katharine (NOT to be mistaken for Katrina)

Sorry dear, I know Emilie's turn was some time ago. Everyone says it was you this time.

There is a tropical depression building at 18.5 N and 50.5 W heading towards Bermuda. Let's pray it dosn't become Hurricane Lee and add to the present problems around the Gulf of Mexico. According to one member of the US Corp. of Engineers - If you have never been to New Orleans - you missed it. It is about to be submerged forever. Another interesting prediction he made - without a 75% reduction in fuel consumption or fuel rationing, fuel will hit $10 to $15 US a gallon within twenty days due to lack of refining facilities.

We heard on the TV last night (or was it this morning?) that there is now to be a MANDATORY evacuation of New Orleans - did that mean ALL of it?
