OT Lets tell a story etc1

Is your Harry the dogs used for police work? I went to a demo with our police and their dogs some time ago and I think they said the breed they were using were Belgian Shepherds.

They certainly are magnificent beasts.

Police most often use Belgian Malinois. Harry and Cash are Belgian Tervuren. The main difference is that Malinois are short coated while Tervuren are long coated. There is also the Groenendaal or Belgian Sheepdog which is entirely black instead of brown with black mask and overlay. In every country but the US, these three are the same breed (along with the wire-haired Laekenois). There are comparative pictures here:

Are they as tall as they look in the pics ? How does Harrys height compare with say Chilkoots ? They look magnificent (and a lot of work!)

The Belgian Shepherd is meant to be a moderate working dog. That said, Harry stands 27 inches which is probably taller than Chilkoot. He only weighs 65lbs, though, so I'd expect Chilkoot could take him. Cash, who is within the breed standard (Harry'd be thrown out of a showring as too tall) is 25 inches tall and 58lbs. Also, where Chilkoot is probably longer than he is tall, my boys are perfectly square (as tall as they are long). Of course, having not met Chilkoot, but vaguely remembering him to be an Alaskan Malamute, I'm working from his breed standard.

Harry's not all that much work. He leans towards couch potato, although he's earned enough first places in agility to prove he can turn it on when he needs to. Cash, on the other hand, is a handful. He now goes to daycare two days a week to get him out of the house because DWH works at home and Cash is always demanding "let's do something!" But I got what I asked for: I wanted a dog with more drive than Harry for agility competitions and Cash is all that. Harry does agility because I ask it of him and he would do anything I ask. Cash, who is less willing to do things simply because I ask him, does agility because he loves it. The only thing he likes better is tracking (which I don't like, but I do it because he loves it so much). By the same token, Harry loves formal obedience work, so he and I are now training for competition at the Open (intermediate) level.

It's hard to say on size, Chilkoot, sitting, came way above my waist. The boys are lovely, I also like Ziggy - the sable is nice too - though the teeth flashing there between the two would not 'feel' good lol That's great that you have figured out what each dog prefers to do, nothing like the dog who wants to please its master.

I feel tired now, thinking of all the training you are doing lol

Thank you. They're very good boys and I really enjoy working with them. Between knitting and the dogs, it's no wonder I get so little needlework done lately.

Even if they do try to herd DS, eh? Or is it *because* they try to herd DS? *grin*

They are beautiful, absolutely beautiful, I could dog-nap them faster than the proverbial speeding bullet. All the shepherd family in Australia tend towards the shorter hair, smaller boned dogs which don't appeal to me..........3 great attractions in my life have been big dogs, big men and big cars - I'm down to only one of this trio.

Ziggy's gorgeous. Very light, almost cream colored, which is really striking with that mask. It's totally incorrect, but I love it. He and Cash are best buds, about a week apart in age.

I would never have known how much Harry likes obedience if Ziggy's owner hadn't filmed us during a trial. You can see on the video what a happy working boy he is. It's way cool to work a dog who's enjoying himself.

Not so much this time of year, but I do an awful lot in the summer to make up for it. *grin*

Mind you, I'm not afraid of dogs at all. But the last time I had an argument with a Dachsie, he won.

Elizabeth (my boys tend not to argue all that much to begin with)

Temptress.........some of these dogs are beautiful, and some of the kennels really close to me. When the man of my life's very aged cat finally shuffles off this mortal coil I hope to turn him into a dog person (I'm never going to be a cat person).
