Re: Weird Happening at TSWLTH

I would report her to the manager. Those employees are working for hourly wages and are not allowed to ask for tips. I can't believe she'd have the gall to do that.

Yikes! That is weird! I suggest you go back to the manager and tell her. Or write a letter to the home office. Not that I'm usually a tattletale but that is just not right. Ugh.

Wow.

My understanding of JoAnn policy is that end of the bolt specials are for people who DON'T want it all - by giving them end of the bolt specials, we pursuade them to take it all and whatever remaining they DON'T want, they get at a discount.

The coupon give-away WAS valid - if Joann's had coupons, it was the discretion of the manager to point out that we had them, often in the flyer by the front door. So we'd tell the person, let them go get the flyer and use the coupon - her having one in her pocket simply saved that step - so that part WAS valid and you were entitled to the coupon.

BUT - if the 50% off coupon was only valid for full price stuff - then the amount you got for end of the bolt wasn't eligible to be 50% off AGAIN.

The remeasurement is also wrong. Joann's teaches their employees to measure properly, to not even give an inch of extra fabric.

This woman is has a little racket going and is scamming Joann's - basically - if I understand correctly, you got 1 yard free, 3 yards at 50% off (coupon),

3/8 of a yard at 50% off (end of bolt) and then that same 3/8 at ANOTHER 50% off (coupon).

This woman is stealing by short-selling fabric that doesn't belong to her, and then expecting tips for her "services."

Also - do not feel icky about it. You were too surprised to think it through and understand what happened there. You neither perpertrated this, nor were you an accessory, it looks like you were duped into believing that it was legitimate. Even when she asked for the tip - the fact you were speechless tells me you still weren't sure what was going on.

When you came home and had time to consider it - I think is when you finally got a glimmer that something about the transaction MAY not have been right.

I would make sure she never cuts fabric for you again. If she is the only cutter, regretfully pass up buying that day. If she is not, get in the other cutter's line.

For those of you who may scold me for not reporting her to the manager - back off.

It is possible that the manager will agree with everything the employee did (a couple times, my manager let end of bolts go for 50% off the whole thing! It is manager's discretion and maybe this manager TOLD the employee they could do that to get rid of stock). The measurement was wrong, but even that can be explained away by carelessness.

The only real issue is the tip part. And the employee could come back and say she was joking.

Yes, she could. But everyone in the world knows that when you're joking and someone takes you seriously by mistake, you correct them. She didn't; she accepted the money. She wasn't joking.

I may have misunderstood this thread; if so, just ignore me.

It seemed to methat no one gets irate that an employee is defrauding Joann's, but finds great fault when the employee extends that dishonest behavior to the customer?

Ouch - this is horrible. I would call the manager and tell the whole story. That employee is NOT doing Joannes (or the customers) any favors. If the manager is smart, you won't have to pay any more for the fabric since you called, but the worst case scenerio is that you'd need to pay what you were willing to pay in the first place.

I isn't just Joanns - this type of thing happens all the time, unfortunately.

My kids and their friends all have friends who work at local restaurants and game places. Some of these employees will give away free food, beverages, and game chits to anyone they know who comes in. It's a wonder the stores make any profit at all. The teenage employees do it to be popular or to impress cute girls/guys.

well, that irritated me, too, and I neglected to mention it specifically, because I wanted to keep my post short. My point was basically that she should report the ENTIRE incident to management.

I think the main issue is the employee has asked for a tip, which is inappropriate and possibly against company policies. I would mention it to the store manager. She doesn't really need to know all the details because that is not the problem. The problem is the employee is asking customers for money.
