OT: new thread about books/authors

I wonder if Kathy Reichs has picked up now that she has her TV show - "Bones" . Which is pretty good - at least DH & I think so. The first handful of episodes very focused on the Kathy Reichs character - but once they made it more of an ensemble, with more from the rest of the cast, it got better IMHO. Pretty witty, but don't watch during dinner if you have a weak stomach.

I haven't read that one. I did read all the Valdemar series, which I quite liked, and the "Exile" 2 books - which is related. Then I found a lot of hers got more formulaic, less interesting. But, I'll check these out.

Hmmm - something to look at.

Interesting. I just read the most recent PD James - which was interesting as at least the TV series hasn't gotten there yet. I still really like Martha Grimes, and Elizabeth George - thought her most recent was better than the prior. Who knows.

I haven't read much of her.

I've never read the books, but I faithfully watch the show. It's definitely one of the better ones in this dismal TV season. At least it doesn't yet seem to be part of what's been called the dumbing down of America.

Agreed. We watch that, and Burn Notice, and House. After that, well - for stupid fun, Psych. And a lot of the Bravo shows. And PBS. Also, sometimes, Monk.

Same here. I will admit to sometimes turning on Lifetime or Hallmark mostly for the noise and I've been finding that I can almost always predict the end of the tale, which is mostly boy meets girl, boy loses girl, boy gets girl, or in this day and age, some variation on gender.

Every so often there's a really good movie, but for the most part, they too aren't really all that entertaining. I think I want to go back to fantasy and fun and color and music.

Try Ian Rankin. I like Jan Burke quite a bit and David Baldacci also.

I think Cornwell turned me off about the time of the Book about the Island in the Chesapeake. I know where she was at, but it just didn't ring true to me.

I still like Joanna Brady books....but need to read the other books she has written

Janet Evanovitch.....well,after #6 it was too much repetition.

I LOVE Nevada Barr....Mational Park mysteries.

I love the Sherlock Holmes series by Laurie King, starting with The Beekeeper's Apprentice. Good crisp writing and so far has never disappointed. Haven't read her other stuff.

That is interesting, Sue.

I LOVED the books, but the TV show leave me cold. DH enjoys it, but to me it is untrue, it isn't my Temporance Brennan!

I guess I love to reds, BUT DON'T change my characters!

Ah, the original series was awesome. I loved the whole idea of the woven fate, allegories. But, then they went south pretty much in the early -mid eighties.

Following on those - ever read "Thieves World" - edited by Robert Asprin? I really liked those. And the early "M.Y.T.H., Inc." series. But then they went too simple, although the latest I thought got better.

And Patricia McKillip? Early ones - awesome, then the redundancy thing.

The Quilter's books from Jennifer Chiaverini - the first few, you really wanted to keep on - but then...the last one I was really kind of bored/annoyed.

Just wanted to pop out of lurkdom long enough to point out that Elizabeth Moon wrote the Paksenarrion series. She has a new set of books due to come out early next spring set in the Paksenarrion universe. The snippets she has released on her website and newsgroup are definitely whetting my interest. Can't wait to battle my husband for first reading rights. :)

You may also want to try out the Winning Colors series with Herris Sarano and company and the Vatta trading series by Elizabeth Moon. They are set in space, completely different from the military fantasy that is Paks, but quite good.

Now back to lurkdom. Must go search the bookstores and bookshelves for titles seen in this thread.

I like the Asprin books, even the simple ones. How 'bout Spider Robinson? They were chock full of puns, some of which went over my head.

I'm trying not to return Lion Among Men by the author of Wicked mostly unread to the library. I appreciate the creativity used to create an alternate Oz (the over the rainbow place, not the one 'down under') universe but I don't seem to like the dark spin put on familiar characters.

Just another .02 worth - Another mystery author I just recalled really liking was Erin Hart - stories involved murder, archeology (one of my favorite subjects) in Ireland. MelissaD

Thanks for the correction. I knew that. And have the books - my bad.

I read the Winning colors series, but not the Vatta trading series.

Something for all of us ... Thanks again for the correction.

Honestly, I've not been able to finish reading Wicked. We saw the show, and it was really, really, really good. And I have a green monkey which we couldn't resist buying at Ken Ctr. I understand your POV. Eventually I'll finish it.

I really slogged through it too. The part at school was interesting; got bogged down in the later stuff. I haven't tried Son of a Witch yet.

Finished Double Cross last night; it was hard to put it down. Starting Jonathon Kellerman's "Bones" tonight.

Nana must be an amazing person, one would think. I am sure the Mastermind will appear in the new "Cross" book.
