OT: Olwyn Mary :-)))))

She just posted to one of the other groups. Here is her entire post, just in case she doesn't get anything posted here right away.......

I'm safe, cool and dry in a suburb of Lake Charles, LA, right near the Texas border, staying with the friends we made when we evacuated for HurrixNE iVAN. (And I can't type worth a @#$% on this laptop when I'm used to a real keyboard). After the canal gave wAY, I decided to get out even though we were up high, just in case the moat effect did happen. There was(and still is) only one way out of New Orleans which is the Crescent City Connection. For those of you who have visited the city, that is the huge bridge which crosses the river just above downtown. From there, the only road available was U.S. 90. As DH has well controlled diabetes, plus a pacemaker which is rapidly approaching the end of its projected life, and as thehospitals were evacuating, I decided to get him out of there while I still could. I had started packing several days ago on the assumption we would fly out, but at 1 a.m. I heard about the canal walls and pumps failing. Woke up dh (he had had 2 hrs sleep, I had about 1/2 hr). We packed for a car trip instead, called a young, fit neighbor and cleaned out fridges and freezers for her to share with the nbhood, unplugged the appliances, turned off the water heater, and were onthe road by 3:30 a.m. Once out of the city, we stayed on U.S. 90 instead of trying for the interstate, and there was hardly a car on the road. Very foggy going over the swamps and bayous. I drove until dawn, then we stopped at a truckstop, waited for full daylight, called our friends here before they left for work. They were thrilled we had "come to our senses" and left a key under the mat for us. DH took over the driving. We finally got here in the early afternoon, and I am now severely jetlagged from lack of sleep. On the other hand, I slept in a bed last night, not on the floor of a shelter, praise heaven.

What the future holds, we have no idea. we have a few clothes and our important papers, and that is all. I didn't even bother bringing the family pictures, but they are on the second floor so they should still be there. One close friend of mine who live(d) in Chalmette - downriver from the city - e-mailed a news photo showing where her house had been. She has lost everything she ever owned, so I must count myself extremely fortunate. -

I have been totally awed and humbled by the outpouring of care and concern from al my cyberfriends. DH is just astounded - didn't really realise the bond which turns us all into family.

Are there any posters near where I am now? If so, please get in touch.

Now to figure out how to post this message on the other boards rather than typing it out again.

With love and very grateful thanks

Olwyn Mary NOT in New Orleans.

Thank you Tia Mary for posting this. Very happy to hear that all is well. Physical possesions are meaningless compared to human life. Now I'll have to find another cute cat picture to send you. Did I send you the one of the cat sprawled out on the couch with a beer in one paw and the remote in the other? Must be a male cat ofcourse.

Thanks Tia Mary for posting good news this time. Hopefully there will be more people like them who are lucky enough to get out of the mess in New Orleans. Lucille

Thank you, Tia Mary, for passing that along. She's been on my mind - as well as everyone else's, I'm sure - through all the news reports. Maybe somewhere down the line when she gets back to Nawlins she can let us know what is the most effective help we can offer. I'm not talking right now, but months from now. (Obviously for right now, giving through disaster relief agencies is the most effective.) But needs will exist for a long time. Maybe we can do something as a group with her as our "on the ground" representative during a future wave of assistance.

Oh Dear -- you didn't send me *that* one!! Sounds just tooooo cute :-)! Keeping this on the Olwyn Mary topic, she was online with her laptop earlier today at the same time I was. We Instant Messaged a bit and she "sounded" really good. I have her current phone number and think I will call her later today. Now, I need to ask everyone who reads this to send good stuff for one of the RCTQ ladies -- Polly Ester -- who lives in Pascagoula, FL. We have had no word of her and everyone over at RCTQ is praying, etc. that she has made it through this ordeal with her health. As you say, George, material stuff is just that -- material -- and can be replaced. CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Pascagoula MS or Pensacola FL?

I have resources for both locations, so just verify which one you really mean, and I'll zip them off to you via e-mail.

Most of the MS coast, essentially, the first 6 blocks from the water is washed to sea, and from there, the houses are standing, just damaged. So, if you have a snail mail for her, you can check one of the map sites and see if she's in that first 6 blocks that is no more.

HMMM -- I was sure she lived in Florida but someone at RCTQ posted that she lived in Pascagoula! I'll have to find out. Thanks & CiaoMeow >^;;^<

LOL -- No, that's her screen name :-). I checked the RCTQ directory and found out that she lives in Moss Point, MS. I haven't looked at a map but I would be willing to bet Moss Point is somewhere between Biloxi & the FL border. Karen, I have her street addy. If you really do think your contacts could check this out for me, I would GREATLY appreciate it!! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Moss Point is on the north side of Pascagoula, MS. It is north of Rt.

90 but south of I-10. I guessed that was a screen name--pretty cute!

Glad to hear that Olwyn mary is OK - so sad to see those poor (in all senses of the word) who are stuck there and, in their own words, "starving".

Even sadder is the sight of so many resorting to violence and looting in such a civilised country, but, on the other hand, what else can they do when their children are under such deprivation and duress.

The one that moved me the most was the man saying he held onto his wife`s hand as she begged him to let go of her and look after the children. That was the last he saw of her.

As I said to Carolyn, yesterday - when Mother Nature just coughs, we all have to watch out!

I remembered that there is an RCTQ Directory with names and snail mail addies. I couldn't sleep so last night at 1:00 am I got up and found Polly's addy and then went to the white pages. She is unlisted :-(. The Karen was online and sent me some links to local papers so I went to several and entered her name & addy and asked for any info. Then I went to several different maps and actually *found* her street -- THIS kept me up until about 3:00 AM but I slept very soundly knowing I had done *something* to try and find out how Polly is!! She lives considerably inland and north of I-10 between Hwy. 63 & Hwy. 613 near Black Creek Cooling Pond. If anyone has any info about that part of Moss Point, MS I would appreciate ANY information. Thanks & CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Thanks for sharing. I'm sitting here feeling more than a bit guilty because my life right now is good and that I can't make everything better for those poor souls affected by Katrina
