OT: Re: the argument over the Bible...from an oldie/newbie's prospective

I used to read this newsgroup several years ago and it was so full of OT posts and had so many posts/day that I had to stop. One of the most amusing (to me) was whether "peeps" (candy) were better fresh or stale!! And there was an expert who was violently against people licking their floss to thread their needles- that the saliva would in 100 years lead to deterioration of the fabric. Anyone remember her name?...Saints preserve us!! Anyway, a few days ago I decided to resub and was pleased to find I could keep up and get enthusiastic about stitching again, (I have really become rabid about crochet of all shapes & forms) However today I logged in to find a humongous number of posts, and almost all OT! :-( I was sad to see an argument develop (with real rancor) between Mirjam (hello!!!) and Lucretia Borgia (?) about religion/bible. And possibly sides developing, just like on the playground in grade school :-)) My point is: Number one, why didn't anyone change the title to OT-religious war, sooner than happened, which thank you to her/him who did eventually) and two: this is why religion & politics are banned from dinner parties (and should/would be from newsgroups if they were moderated!!) Just a note from an oldie/newbie!! Marilyn in North Bend, OR where the weather is very comfy almost all year 'round, even during the rain!

There is nothing surreptitious about Lucretia Borgia - screen names are the way people avoid spam amongst other things. Plenty of people know my real name and me.

I have never attended dinner parties where religion and politics - or sex - were banned. I don't think I could be bothered going to one, they are the topics with the most spice.

Moderation would presumably equal censorship then ?

Welcome back!

Christine - she was very knowledgeable, and could be riotously funny, but I used to wonder if she wasn't bi-polar since she would get so extreme and nasty (just ask Teri). Her insistence on the 'floss licking' was just one (of many examples).

Agreed - I find both Mirjam and Sheena to have lots of good information, but I regularly have to stop reading their posts when things get too heated. Every time I tell myself that I won't get involved, but I do - sigh.

I feel this last statement is distinctly heavy, very far from light.

Gosh, out here in the unsophisticated west we ban sex at dinner parties. Only allowed outside in the pickup trucks.

I've been to dinner parties where there was near-sex. A friend and her new beau all but did it on the table in the restaurant while waiting for the server to bring our soup. His friend and I figured out there was only one safe place to look ... deep into each other's eyes.

I determined that his are a remarkable shade of blue. He determined that mine are quite a vivid blue, much brighter than the average blue eye.

Do you think it's safe to look now, or shall we just keep staring into each other's eyes a while longer?

No, I wouldn't look away until the waitress arrives and shoos them off the table so she has a place to put the soup bowls.

Lol, I'd be out in the truck a lot. In the dinner party era David and I picked our guests very carefully to have the best of debates at the table. No subjects were barred, it was lively (to say the least) but not acrimonious) - sometimes we were at the table for hours and once or twice I really wondered if they would have noticed if I had served bacon butties.
