Piecework's cover project - Knots!

Okay, so after about a week of looking at it, I started the Mar/Apr edition of Piecework's cover project. Now, it is a 3.25 x 2.25" Knotwork "mini-rug". You can see a pic here:

resisted because I'm not very good at french knots and when I read up on Teresa Layman's patterns... 2000 (that's THOUSAND) french knots per square inch quite frankly scared the wits out of me. See:

the design is really attractive and kept calling to me... so Friday I went along to the LNS and had a great time picking out all the GAST threads (missing only one!) and went home to trace the design onto some muslin and get started. It's not all French Knots, some are Colonial Knots. I have to say that so far, I'm having a great time! It's pretty tiny so I need my light and magnifier but it's SO neat! I just wanted to share and maybe encourage others who might be turned off by the "knots" and it's really not so bad once you get into the swing. The article in Piecework had some really clear photos of step-by-step methods for both Colonial and French knots and well, since we were sort of putting down Piecework the other day, I just wanted to say something positive - this is the first time in a loooong while that I've done one of their projects.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that about 14,500 knots??...for a 3.25 X

2.25 design? I don't think it will be added to my 'todo' list any time soon! :)

Mavia did you ever see the piece at the church in Rockingham? It's hanging just as you go in. Tree of Life, done by a woman who attended Bev Wiles crewel classes. The trunk of the tree is done in fine chain stitch but the leaves are all done in French Knots. It took her several years to complete, a labour of love for her church. How many people appreciate the skill and beauty of it, one wonders!!

The tree is actually about 18 - 20 inches tall, so we are not talking small. Done with silk on fine linen. No shortage of 'leaves' on the tree either. Well worth stopping by for a look.

That sounds impressive Sheena! Which church would that be?

It's the very popular one in Rockingham, I believe United Church. I saw the piece itself at Bev's so did not have to go to the Church to see it.

Thanks Sheena, I know where the United church is there. I'll make a point to check it out.

I love Teresa's designs - I'm currently halfway through the Bunny Run Around rug...which you can see here -

isn't as hard as it looks once you get going - the colonial knots fill in much faster and tend to be used for the background areas. When you purchase her designs at a shop the picture is already printed onto the muslin for you so that saves you a step.It is kind of a nice change from counting and following a chart - you can simply stitch the designated color to fill in a section. All her charts are so cute! Have fun Jeanine! MelissaD

I've seen it on their website but as of yesterday I still can't find it on the news stands here in Ottawa. Nice project, but a little too involved for me. Still would like to get their magazine. I don't buy too many magazines lately, but the ones I do like, I do get and Piecework is one of them.
