Positive thoughts

I'd like to ask y'all for positive thoughts, prayers, whatever you are comfortable with early tomorrow (Friday) morning.

While we were out of town last week, my 2 year old grandson was burned rather badly on one foot, and somewhat less badly on both of his hands. He's having surgery in the morning to graft skin on the third degree burns on his foot.

He's such a little trooper -- he can't stand on that foot because it's so painful, but he's scooting around nearly as fast as he was running before, and he has such a positive personality and is such a sweetie.

When a stranger asks why his foot is bandaged, he says, "Boo-boo, I burn it." It'd break your heart.

Anyway, I am keeping his two older siblings right now -- they have a different dad (he's in Afghanistan at the present time) -- and his stepmom who promised to keep them on Fridays decided to take a vacation to the Virgin Islands without telling anyone -- my daughter finally got her on her cell phone late today, and she was quite annoyed at having been interrupted.

Stress, stress and more stress -- I'm just grateful for a great burn center here and wonderful docs and nurses and concerned friends.

Thanks....

I will be thinking of him tomorrow and wishing him a speedy and uneventful recovery. I do agree, there's nothing so sad as a little kid's eyes when they hurt.

Thanks to everyone....

Evan is fine, breezed through the surgery, from what his mom said when she called me. It took about an hour, and I could hear him in the background afterwards, talking and laughing. He's amazing. He's my new hero.

Poor little soul - ther`s very little more painful than a burn. How on earth did he do it? I really hope that all goes well and he heals with no problems or scars.

How did he do it....well, I suppose that's a story in itself. His parents live out a ways from town on some acreage. They recently had several old and rotten pine trees cut down, and a pit had been dug to burn them. Additionally a smaller pit had been dug in the back yard to burn other brush.

Evan's dad thought it had all burned itself out, as it hadn't even looked like it was smoldering for a couple of days. He was working out in the back yard while my daughter had taken her daughter to the grocery store, and my other grandson was inside the house playing, what else, video games.

Greg turned his back for that proverbial "just a second" and Evan walked over to investigate things -- and as he stepped onto some of the ashes, his foot broke through into smoldering hot ash. He apparently leaned down to brace himself, and that's when his hands were burned.

He called "Daddy" and Greg turned around and couldn't even tell he was in trouble, he just thought he'd lost his balance, but when he walked into the pit to pick him up, he realized his own shoes were burning.

He jerked him up and out and turned the water hose on him, pulling off his little sandals.

He had second degree burns on both hands, and on the bottom of his foot -- the side of his foot was burned more badly, third degree in three patches.

They rushed to the emergency room, and the doctors there sent him over to the burn center at LSU (Louisiana State University) Med. Center.

We were in San Diego when we got the call, scheduled to fly out the next morning anyway. All my daughter could say was how awful it looked, and how bad it was. We couldn't get home any more quickly, and let me tell you, that was an agonizing night. When we got to their house the next day, there was Evan on the den couch, all propped up on pillows with hands and foot bandaged, and a huge smile on his face, happy to see us. He's really amazing.

Today they took skin from his upper thigh for the grafts, and he'll be bandaged for a week, then he goes back for a check to see how well the grafts are taking.

I'm so grateful that children heal so quickly and that they usually heal so well. Evan has an amazing personality; he's so engaging and upbeat nearly all the time.

We are so fortunate he didn't topple over onto his face -- he'd have almost surely been terribly injured if not killed. I am grateful every day that what happened to him is fixable, and that he is taking it in stride.

That said, I do know that, as you say, Pat, burns are terribly painful, and I just ache for him when he hurts.

I've been reading the posts with interest. Blessings to your grandson. And hugs to you. It's so very difficult to watch wee ones be in pain. Dianne
