Rhodes Butterfly Stitch

Hi Everyone,

I have been sewing various canvas embroidery stitches on small pieces of canvas then placing them into a little album to make up a stitch dictionary.

I would now like to try out the Rhodes Butterfly stitch but haven't had any luck finding instructions on this. It is not mentioned in any of my needlework books. I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction.

Thank you.

I don't know a source online but I do have it in one of the charts in my stash. If someone doesn't come up with an online reference, post again and I'll scan my directions and e-mail them to you -- once I find the chart with the stitch on it :-)))! CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Here's a page from Victoria Sampler that has instructions. Scroll down to the middle of the page to find it.

Thanks so much for that link Lucille. It is appreciated. I had been googling for an hour and come up zilch LOL.

Unfortunately from the diagram I can't quite tell how I am supposed to execute the stitch. It looks like there are a couple of stitches in each hole???

Hi Tia Mary,

Thank you for your reply. Even though Lucille has kindly posted a link on how to do the stitch, it is still not very clear to me. If it is not too much trouble for you, it would be greatly appreciated if you could find the instructions when you have the time. That would be great. I hope they are "hold your hand instructions". You know...go up hole 1, gone down hole 2 LOL.

Seems to be a very illusive stitch.

If you go to the stitch animations on the Victoria Sampler site you will 'see' how the stitch is made.

It's under Surface Stitches. You may have to join the VS Club to access it but there are a lot of benefits (free charts, finishing ideas, etc.) available without any obligation.

Where`s that great stitch library site? I thought I had it in my favourites but it seems to have vanished. DD#2 has taken to making fabric boxes and wants to know what Whip Stitch is - we probably know it under another name!

I was hoping that someone would come up with one of those diagrams that number the order in which you pass the needle through. Never mind, I should be able to work it out. I`m just lazy.

Thanks Mavia. I've looked up stitches on that site several times and completely missed the animation link.

Whip stitch: Come up on one side at the fold. Go diagonally to the left about 1/16". Make a straight stitch (straight toward you aka straight down) on both edges of the fold.

This stitch creates a very tiny ridge. The ridge will be greater depending upon the width between the stitches and how much bite of the folds you take for each straight stitch.

That is a GREAT animation. What a useful link! Thanks....and I didn't even know I was looking for it, just loved the look of the stitch.

Oooh, that's one of the better animations I've seen. You can pause it anywhere you need to.

Aaah! Thanks Dianne - I thought that was what it was!

Now to explain it to Jane. I think she knows, too, really - but calls it something else! Thanks again.

It`s certainly great - but I`d still rather see one of those numbered ones!

I agree. With this particular stitch, me thinks you need several diagrams, not just one.

I checked your site, Dianne, but even you don`t have one of the numbered ones. Hint! Hint!

Hi Fran, I have found the chart with the Rhodes B'fly stitch. Since there seems to be additional interest in this stitch, I think I will post it to my Webshots Needlework album so others can take advantage. Will that work for you or would you like me to e-mail you the diagram? OH -- it does have each stitch numbered but in the UP hole only. I'll see if I can't do something to fix that :-)! If you want me to e-mail the stitch diagram to you, PLEASE, e-mail me asking me to do so, OK? CiaoMeow >^;;^<

I got the diagram uploaded to the Needlework Album at my Webshots site. It's the last pic in the album AND it's got the stitches numbered. The original didn't have numbers for the down stitch -- just directions to come up at the black dot and go down at the arrow. I added numbers for the down stitches but wrote them upside down on the chart. I also added the words UP with an up arrow and DOWN with a down arrow (both upside down) to make it a bit easier for newbies to the stitch. If anyone would like me to e-mail the diagram to you, just e-mail me asking and I'll send it off to you. CiaoMeow >^;;^<
