size does matter

Thanks to a suggestion from someone here when I asked about a non-XS design, I purchased Victoria Sampler's Heirloom Wedding Sampler:

wish I could do the large piece but I can't I'm going to do the box top heart because I think counting challenged me might be able to handle the less complicated design. I've got a few questions before I begin. The model was stitched on 28 ct linen and measured 4.5 x 4.5. LNS shop owner assured me that an 11 x 11 piece of 25 count linen is large enough for the 64 x

64 stitch count.

I'm pretty sure that everything is stitched over two which should present no problem for laying down the trellis for the heart but I'm having a severe brain fart figuring out how the satin stitches for the border should be done -- over two will make 'em longer but not wider. Do I 'skip' a thread to retain the overall shape of the swirl?

Help!!!!!

Loading thread data ...

Double the satin stitches as well as making them twice as long. Do two satin stitches for every one stitch shown on the chart.

so:

chart shows ...-----

----- ....-----

(dots are unstitched boxes, dashes are the satin stitched lines)

you will stitch ......---------- ......----------

----------

---------- ........---------- ........----------

clear as mud?

Anne,

I'm so glad you decided to do this chart! It tells you at the bottom of the main chart that each square equals 2 fabric threads. I believe this to be true for the box top as well. Just because you are using a larger count fabric, you do not need to 'skip' a thread to keep the swirl...what it means is that each stitch will be further apart, so you may want to use 2 strands of Trebizond instead of one to make sure you have good coverage. If you have other specific questions about VS designs, the designer herself (Thea Dueck) often answers questions at

Despite y'all's help, I doomed -- spent almost all day trying to lay down the trellis for the heart ... never got it right, so I gave up and faked one that vaguely resembles the one on the design. Since the trellis is off, putting down flowers on the outline is also off ... hopefully, I'll be able to compensate so the shape will look more like a heart tomorrow. If that's successful, rather than get even more grey hairs doing a border that's bound to turn out not to be equidistant from the shape and square, I may go with simple bands at the top and bottom.

I could blame my difficulty on the meds I've been taking for persistant sinus infections but counted stitching just doesn't seem to be something I can do If anyone wants the blackwork book and two gorgeous charts sold by Marion Scoular's company that I bought at EGA's recent national seminar for what I paid for 'em, contact me offline. I'll sweeten the deal and throw in cost of mailing to US and Canada.

Sorry--that was a post made back that last time that my clock was fast, and I guess it just showed up on some servers as the date is getting closer. It's been fixed since then. I hope there aren't too many more late posts showing up!

Best wishes, Ericka

Hmmm, I'm a little worried about that one. According to the chart, the original was 6.75" x 6.75" on 28 count Quaker Cloth, and she recommended cutting 13" x 13". The stitch count is actually 94 x 94, unless you're skipping much of the Hardanger border. The original *is* worked over two (each square on the diagram is 2x2 threads of fabric). So, if I were moving to 25 count fabric, I'd calculate the design size to be 7.5" x7.5". So, you'll still fit the design on your 11" x 11" piece, but you'll only have 1.75 inches around the edge, so you'll have to frame carefully.

I'm not sure what you're saying here. What swirl are you talking about? Do you mean the heart shaped swirls in the corner? If so, you don't skip anything. If you look at diagram X, that diagrom is thread by thread and shows precisely where to lay each stitch. Since your fabric is a bit bigger, you might want to go with something a tad thicker than the #12 pearl cotton just to make sure make sure it doesn't look too thin, but you could probably get away with the #12 pearl cotton (for that, and for the wrapping and filling with the Hardanger). It's not *that* huge a difference between 25 count and 28 count. As far a the satin stitches go, again, there's really no difference. The main chart shows them over two, and you'll be doing them over two. Your fabric will be a bit larger, so the stitches will end up a tiny bit farther apart, but at least with mine, the Trebizond was plenty thick for coverage on the 28 count linen I used, and might well do just fine on 25 count. You'll just have to see if you're getting the coverage you want. With the satin stitch, you'll be laying a stitch between every ground thread, so there really isn't any way to double up. Putting two strands of Trebizond together will be way too thick. About the only thing you could do is switch to a slightly thicker fiber, but my hunch is that you'll get good enough coverage with the Trebizond.

Best wishes, Ericka
