stumpwork

Hi, I'm very interested in stumpwork. Could anyone give me some advice about a good beginners book. I read the following books are very good:

Stumpwork embroidery: A Collection of Fruits, Flowers and Insects for Contemporary Raised Embroidery (Milner Craft Series) by Jane Nicholas. Dennis, Kay. A Beginner's Guide to Stumpwork. Raised embroidery: a practical guide to decorative stumpwork by Roy and Barbara Hirst

Who can advise me on this subject?

I would second the recommendation of Jane Nicholas' book. Another good book for beginners in stumpwork is Annette Hinde's Australian Wildflowers in Stumpwork. There is good basic instructions in the first chapters. As well as asking questions here there are several good Yahoo groups which you could join to receive help.

Thank you for your advice. I just ordered the book by Jane Nicholas. The reviews at Amazon were also very good.

Jane Nicholas also sells kits. It could be a good starting point for you, meaning that you wouldn't have to buy more supplies than you needed just to start and see if you wanted to continue with Stumpwork. Jane and her husband are very nice to deal with. I purchased a dragonfly kit from them last year. If you write to them, they have a catalogue of their kits and supplies. No affiliation, etc, etc. Here's the street addy (there is no email or web address): Jane Nicholas Embroidery Chelsea Fabrics

Of course I'm interested in stumpwork kits. But the problem is, that I live in Holland, and stumpwork is not very well known here. So far I've found only one internetshop in Holland that sells such kits (only four of them), and they didn't look very spectacular It's difficult to order anything abroad because I don't have a creditcard. Also I don't have any idea how match the shipping costs. I'm afraid it gets very expensive.

I recently bought A-Z of Stumpwork and absolutely love it!!! The stitching diagrams and explanations are among the best I've ever seen. In addition, there is (are??) a variety of projects complete with trace offs, instructions, and materials lists.

Anne: How does the A-Z compare to Nicholas's first work (Fruits, flowers, et al)? I can't say enough good things about Jane Nicholas's book, but haven't seen the newer A-Z. Country Bumpkins always does such an excellent job.

TripleM will find that she can use ordinary supplies and create scrumptuous things. I learned that the DMC variegateds were perfect for petals - as opposed to starting new threads in needlelace. Uncovered florist wire works beautifully if you can't locate the covered wire, but you may have to overcast it first - for instance for a white petal and using green wire, overcast with white thread before the buttonholing. This, in essence, covers the wire! It's just an extra (granted, time consuming) step.

Thank you for your extensive explanation. May be I'll give it a try and write a letter. How much does a money order cost in Canada? Here in Holland it's called Western Union Money Transfer (in good english ;-)) and it costs about 9,50 euro according the information on internet.

I was fortunate enough to be able to take a 2 day workshop from Jane Nicholas about 9 years ago when she was in the US for an EGA Regional Seminar - outstanding teacher! Absolutely amazing work - she brought almost all the stitched models to show that were photographed in her book - stunning.

She was very friendly and informative and her books seem to reflect that as well.

Enjoy! MelissaD

Western Union is fairly expensive, but in the US you can get a money order at the post office for less.

I'm getting very very curious about Jane's book. I hope I don't have to wait too long till I can collect it in the bookstore.

Speaking of stumpwork books, has the new Jane Nicholas book been released yet? It isn't available here in Canada yet, although Chapters is taking advance orders. It is called the Complete book of Stumpwork (I think). I was wondering if it repeats the information found in the first book, or contains more information, or is a completely different presentation on the subject.

I'll get around to stumpwork one of these days. Dora

Oh my goodness. Hadn't heard about a new book! I'll be on the lookout. If you hear more, I'd appreciate any updates on information. :-)

Stumpwork: if you already embroider, there is nothing new to learn except how to handle the wires, which is easy to do. And since you work on muslin, it's cheap, so if you mess up, there's nothing much lost and its simple to do again.

OOOOOH! So jealous! That must have been a blast. I took a couple stumpwork classes thru HNG with Marsha Papay-Gomolo, of Ladybug designs. I really enjoyed her work. Now if I can just get back to working on those kits... Julie

I don't have the Nicholas book so I can't compare them. I can say, however, that I finally learned how to do a drizzle stitch following the A-Z instructions. Now, I've got to figure out when to use it ;-)

Oh, you got me going, so I dug out Yvonne Burton's book - which shows how to do this. I knew I had learned at one point in time. She uses it for flower centers and says if the bullions are long enough you can weave them.
