What makes a mystery sampler a mystery?

I keep seeing people talking about "mystery" pieces - mostly samplers.

What is a mystery piece? Is it just the serial nature of it? Is there a hidden message? A bit of code?

Inquiring minds want to know!

There's no picture of the finished piece, so you won't know what it looks like until you've finished it.
