William Morris designs

I was searching for William Morris designs as Maureen fancied trying one of them out in cross-stitch. I found this site

But beware - the prices are a bit steep!

I've done Hare and Lion from the Forest page, Lion was particularly nice because the size made it a nice one for grandchildren to use on the floor.

It was the first time I had worked with painted canvas, as opposed to working with a chart, and I am a bit ambivalent about it. Her canvasses are very well painted but I found it was easy to miss a stitch so at the end had to hold it up to the light and find them.

I would have used the charts in her book but found the kits - heavily marked down - in John Lewis in Kingston-on-Thames, so went with that. Her kits contain generous quantities of the wools, the wools are also a very nice quality (no synthetics) so it depends whether you can wait for a sale, or do it from a chart.

There is a book or two of Beth Russel/William Morris charts. You should be able to find it and kit it up yourselves. C

Beth Russell put out a re-worked version of her first book last year so there are 4 books out in total now.

I've thought of doing the Lion (being a Leo) but have never quite got around to it. I bought it as a cross stitch chart as well as the needlepoint chart in the book, so I'm not sure which one I'll make - it's way down on the list after the rugs. The one thing I don't care for are the dark blue backgrounds will probably change that when I make them.

Barbara Hammet also has a cross stitch book on William Morris and I quite like some of her designs.

Look for Millenium Designs. They are a UK company. In the shop we have several of their NP kits, and at least a dozen gorgeous XS charts. They have some William Morris, William de Morgan (similar and stunning) and others of that style. The Millenium charts are quite expensive here in the US, but should be reasonable on your side of the pone.

We also have some Beth Russell NP kits that are William Morris.

I'll look today when I'm in the shop. If you can't find what you're looking for, then LMK and I can always have the shop send one to you. I've been eyeing a pair of the charts myself....

Following up my own post - kind of weird. It's "Millenia Designs" , and they definitely have William Morris patterns as cross stitch, and others of that style. Here the charts seem to be between $18 - $24 for the large size. We have some of the smaller size charts as well - the kind in about a

6" X 9" package, and those are about $10.

William Morris patterns are addictive and my sister loves them, in fact she's crackers about all the pre-Raphaelite artwork. She almost swooned when I showed her around St Martin's church in Scarborough, Yorkshire; it's a Victorian building packed with pre-Raphaelite artwork. When the place was built the then Archbishop of York refused to consecrate it because it was "too papish"!

LOL - the shop is having a "Winterfest" sale (we're being non-denominational). So, the last few days have been spent finding all kinds of things and re-organizing the newly re-done (moved everything) shop. So, all the Holiday stuff is on sale 20% off, fabrics, tools, finishing stuff, gifty things 15%, and regular charts 105. But.... We have a ton of some gorgeous and pricey charts - big booklets that we usually drool over, so we've made them a special sale 15% off, with a bunch of art deco XS kits at 20% off, and some other really nice high end kits also at 20%.

I was dashing around like a madwoman this a.m. Trying to finish moving displays, and then stickering the "special" sale items. We also put all the Mystic Stitch and Scarlet Quince Fine Art charts (charts done of paintings that are out of copyright) on sale for 20% off - we have lots. But, one of my favorite corners is the one with the Millenia designs charts - we have a lot, and a bunch of Charlotte's Web - the art deco pieces, and some other European kits of art deco stuff. The Milennia is on the normal 10% sale, but the others are on the 20%.

So, trying not to be crazy expensive - for the locals. And myself.

The sale is on til end of the month. And we actually had people waiting to get into the store when we opened - the door was open, but we'd forgotten to flip the sign at exactly 12. Good thing - we were busy! Now I get the fun on Tuesday of re-organizing all the charts not in the special holiday section - there is a double stack about 18 inches high of charts that I pulled from where the holiday charts section is on display. What fun - for sure I'll know what we have when I'm done moving the many racks of charts around (re-filing them). But, I have seen some gorgeous stuff. The owner has been hoarding and collecting holiday stuff for this event - bought a lot at the shows this winter/spring, so.....
