grave markers

Hello Everyone, I want to make a grave marker for my dog. I'd like it to lay flat on the ground rather than stick up like a garden marker. Does anyone know how thick I can make the slab so that it will dry thoroughly and make it through the two firings? Thanks, Sandi

Hi Sandi:

I've fired things successfully up to about 2" thick. Just have to make sure it is completely dry. I let my sculptures dry for at least two months and they seem to do fine.

I'm sorry about the loss of your dog. I recently lost a grey hound. Norma Jean. She had raced in Arizona, mostly in B class. I did my grave marker in stone, but clay would be a nice idea. So many relief designs you can do with it.

i've done bricks to cone 10 and made about 50 square feet of a walkway.

i used a high grog stoneware (soldate60) and they were handbuilt, "squashed" into a form.

i fired in the gas kiln, VERY slowly. i candled overnight which took the kiln from 0° to 300°F over 10 hours. i would tweak the kiln raising the temp about 100°F an hour until after the kiln was red, then after that i raised temps per normal.

very slow, maybe slower then i needed, but they sure look neat!

see ya

What a tremendously useful suggestion! I can see all sorts of applications for that! Thanks vm!
