Making kiln shelves...

Nov 20, 2003 2 Replies

Hello all,

I'm new to this group and fairly new to ceramics. I have an electric kiln and a small budget. I'd like to make a few shelves for the kiln. I haven't been able to find any information on this. Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks, David

Hi,

The reason that you can't find any info on making kiln shelves is because it is not feasible for the average person to make them at home.

They are made commercially using specialised formulas, pressed under very high pressure and very high fired.

That is why shelves are so expensive.

Anyway, is it worth the risk of a home made shelf breaking and ruining the entire load?

Dave

i use cut up pieces of porcelain floor tiles as dams and shelves in my glass kiln, but that's only up to 1700F or so.
