Need wiring advice from pole to studio

My husband is ready to wire my studio and we have a question or two. We can't seem to find electricians with consistent opinions, so I am turning to you, the ones with experience in this kind of thing.

We have to go 185 feet from the electric pole. Will #4 wire with a 75 amp breaker be sufficient or should we go with #2 wire and a 100 amp breaker? The kiln says 45 amps, but it tripped the 50 amp breaker in my husband's shop. He has #6 wire. We were told #6 wire would do at 185' but we've already seen that it's so. We understand that the length the wire has to go has to come into consideration.

Please email me personally at snipped-for-privacy@aol.com.

Thank you for your help, Gaye

I don't know what gauge wire you need on your 185' run, but can tell you why the 50 amp breaker was tripping. Breakers will handle 100% of their rated load for short periods, but only 80% continously. For a 50 amp breaker, the max continously load is 40 amps, which is less than the rating on your kiln.

in my area, the electric company wires from pole to meter box. you might ask them.

The studio is an additional building in the back of our house. Are you saying the electric company might come out again and run the line for us from the meter to the new building? What would they charge for that?

you said from the pole. you didn't say from the meter.

the electric company in my area is responsible for getting the wire to my meter, although i had to dig the trench and put in the pvc pipe from the street. i'm responsible for anything past that.

you might ask if they can put in another meter. it'll cost you more in the long run, since there's a meter fee usually, and a lot of places won't allow

2 meters on a residential lot, but if you're running it as a business, then it would make things easier, accounting-wise.

Sorry, from the meter pole. It's actually the only pole we have in the yard, so I didn't even think about it. We're all responsible for anything from the meter to whereever we plan to go. I don't foresee this really becoming a business for me so I don't think we'll look into the meter part of it. I found that as soon as my hobbies have turned into a business, it suddenly becomes a lot more work than fun. Thank you for your help. Gaye, TX

I have a similiar hookup. I ran #2 copper two lines and one ground #4

178 feet to my studio. I put a 100 amp service at the studio. Kiln is a Skutt 7 cu ft that needs 48 amps. Put a 60 amp breaker in the service and have had no problems. Wiring runs from my house meter to the studio.

Hope this helps.

I recommend a sub-panel in the studio. When I had mine wired I had one contractor tell me I didn't need a sub-panel in the studio and the other contractor looked at my setup said I needed a sub-panel. I went with the sub-panel. Now I have the ability to add more things if I need to.
