pottery selling & marketing ideas

i was talking off line with another potter, and thought some comments should be posted here as well.

getting too old to crank out regular ware? what other ways are there to shift gears & yet elevate ourselves to better pottery?

one concept of mine was/is to make semi-custom fountains. bigger things that don't ship well but i could hand deliver & install around so cal. backyard fountain installation things. maybe sell & display thru local nurseries, or word of mouth eventually. i think a decent size fountain will need to sit around somewhere before that customer with $2000 walks by, but i gotta believe they are out there. we're living in a state (california) with some of the most cash in the world. gotta find those people!

also something i thought would be fun would be to sell myself to anyone

- maybe focus on the hollywood types but mainly areas where people have cash. i figure i could sell myself & say "anything i make all month for $5000". or pick another number. somehow i think word would get around & people with more cash then brains would like to be able to say "my potter, the guy i have on retainer, made all my ware". it might be a great way to get awsum gifts for xmas for the right crowd!

stew on the ideas, give them a try, whatever. it'd be neat if potters could elevate themselves into positions the old art masters had centuries ago. artists used to be "on staff". what happend to that?

see ya
