Directory

It appears that Alice has been very busy since September of last year. Is there any way someone else can take ovre this chore? I realize that it takes time to do it, but we have many computer savy people out in RCTQ land. Anyone who knows Alice, please present this question to her. Catz brought up the issue of aging directories, and unfortunately, the directory currently being worked on is now probably out of date.

Any suggestions?

I am not the most computer savvy person and probably wouldn't be able to do the fancy input sheets. I would however be able to pull together the information on a basic spreadsheet or word processing package if people email it in and would be happy to volunteer to coordinate that. I would however need a couple of experienced RCTQers to "vet" the directory before mailing, as I know that Alice used to make further enquiries regarding people who wanted to be on the directory but who weren't well known.

You know, Boca Jan has a very good point. Perhaps Alice would welcome someone taking over this task, since her job is her first priority & is very demanding. Doesn't she do a lot of travelling as well? I don't think there would be any harm in contacting Alice & asking her how she feels about turning this over to someone else. It may be weighing her down that she can't get to it & wouldn't it be nice to take that burden off her shoulders?

Alice set up a wonderful database collecting website page thing which according to LN (who first did the directory then later they teamed up) saved weeks of work - the bit slowing Alice down is making sure that everyone is who they say they are which is time consuming - it's her first time at vetting people (which Alice takes **very** seriously) and her job has suddenly gone super busy all we have to do is wait patiently

when it's directory time we will hear from Alice and till then it would be kinder if we just quietly waited - knowing Alice she is feeling super guilty already about this there is no need to make her feel worse with the regular as clockwork where is the directory questions after all.. if we want an addy all we have to do is *ask* either the person themselves or someone else to ask your intended squishee for you if you want to keep it a secret.

Alice surely should not being feeling guilty! She has nothing to feel guilty about. There are many things in life that are more important than others, but, as interesting and helpful as it is, the directory is a gift and a want, not a need. An e-mail works fine for getting addresses (I've done it), and pressuring not only never works well, but often leaves hard feelings in its wake.

I was in a grocery store one day and while at the cashier, accidentally dropped change on the conveyor belt while fishing money out of my purse to pay for my groceries. It took the cashier and me a bit of time to pick up all the coins and the gentleman behind me was becoming agitated. After my purchase was paid for and put in bags, I turned to him with a smile and said, "I think God meant us to run into each other today so you could have the joy of learning patience."

Pauline -- I have offered repeatedly to help out now that she has collected the information. I am quite savvy with both Excel and Word ... and could get things proofed and out in short order (I do not work outside the home). However, she has declined my offers.

If we don't hear from her soon, I guess we'll need to start over collecting data... I'm happy to help with that.

Sometimes when someone has worked on a project for a considerably long time in whatever medium, it becomes their "baby", and they feel very reluctant to part with even a tiny part of it... I speak from personal experience with the website I run for the craft shop where I work part-time - and a new lady who has (IMHO) started to muscle in on everything I do and wants to take the website over as well...

Just my 2 cents - I'm gonna go crawl back under my pier and do some uploading of new stock onto the site.

I know exactly what you mean Suzie... but there also has to come a point where you acknowledge that this project just isn't going to make it to the top of you TO-DO list and you need to delegate.

My two cents... we're there.

I am just hopeing I can get on the next one. I wish I could post more, but I don't like posting just to post something. Sometimes even when I have an answer to a question, by the time I get the question someone has already answered it. Real bummer, cause I don't have answers to quilt questions very often.

dont let that stop ya from posting your point of view, regardless of the quilting question. oddly enough we all do things a wee bit differently and 'you' might just have the perfect way of doing something that would suit someone else to a T. so go for it, dont think you're repeating the obvious cuz its not always so. cheers, jeanne

i agree, Kate. so add my two cents to that as well. jeanne

No what I meant was that they would have already posted the answer I was going to give.

sorry, Kathy, i meant that what you say or rather how you say it might well read differently and give some inkling of a different way to go about something to get the result required. we all do, write and read things differently. so dont think you're necessarily repeating what someone else already said. your way might just be that much tiny wee bit different, enough to spark an idea in the mind of the reader to try something different and reach their goal. argh, sorry bout going about that long winded explanation. oh well. must be the noise of the roading going on outside my house. grrrrrrr. cheers, jeanne

Answer anyway. The questioner's server might have dropped the answer you see, but your answer might show up for her. There are also times when several ways of doing something might get posted in answers, so maybe the method used most by others is what the questioner will decide to do. Debra in VA See my quilts at

I have not been an active poster on the newsgroup lately, but that doesn't mean I haven't been reading when time allowed. I know you have been very patient and it sounds like your patience is wearing thin, and rightly so. So I thought I needed to come out of lurkdom and reply to this thread.

Well, I have been released from the airport asylum! I feel like I have been living out of a suitcase for months! Just returned from California, traveling since October of last year. Home based until May 5 when I have to go to Denver for a week (just in time for the Denver quilt show - funny how that one got planned).

Just finishing up the last of the vetting for the Directory so I have all intentions of getting it out starting tomorrow. Don't know how long it will take me to get through the 250 or so emails, but it is first on my list of things to do. I had 60 names to vet, not an easy task to be sure.

Apologies will come later, but just wanted to let you know that you can return your barrels of tar and boxes of feathers, not that I don't deserve it.

Thanks for posting Alice. I don't think anyone was even thinking along the lines of tar & feathering - I think mostly it was a concern that this project might just be something that you'd be happy to pass on, since you are so busy with your job. You are an angel for wanting to follow it thru, but I hope you don't feel obligated to, just because at one time it did fit in with your life & maybe at the present it isn't a good fit.

No apologies are necessary. It did sound like there are a couple of people who would be willing to take this project on in the future if it doesn't fit into your schedule.

(What part of California did you travel to? North or South?)

I guess I should have explained that I fully understand that I am probably not the best person to do the whole Directory process the next time around. I will be glad to continue to do the data collection and format the form as needed, but I would be glad to hand off the part that LN did for some many years. My job responsibilities have increased greatly since last September. Had I known how much travel I would have been doing, I may have thought differently about handling the entire Directory process at that time. However if I could tell the future, I probably would be spending more time at the track.

As for California, I was in Hollywood, Long Beach, Santa Ana and Irvine. Just missed the big fire near the Hollywood sign.
