The Directory and an interesting day

Thank you all for the kind words about the Directory form. I had hoped to have it out earlier but Murphy had moved into our guest room this week. As many of you may remember, my DH suffers from diverticulosis. Well he thought he was having another attack which started last Thursday. He didn't share this info with me because I knew he had eaten a "forbidden" food around that time and he really wanted to be sure it wasn't just a GI bug that's been going around. He had no symptoms of anything - no fever, nausea or GI impact. By Monday, the discomfort was so bad, he made a doctor's appointment. Then he told me. Several folks had emailed me offline asking about the Directory form just so they didn't miss the posting on the newsgroup and I had indicated that the link would be published Monday night after I got home from work. WRONG! DH did go to the doctor's who indicated she didn't think it was a diverticulitis attack because it was on the right side and not the left which was the location of his previous attacks. I immediately thought of appendicitis. He was scheduled for a CAT scan the following morning. Since I couldn't sleep from worry, I worked on the form.

I wanted to add the field for the Facebook folks which in of itself sounds like a pretty simple task. However, there are four major parts to the Directory form: the instruction page, the form, the confirmation page and the spreadsheet where all the information gets stored. Change any one of them and you have to change them all. Everything seemed to look ok until I went to publish everything to the server. Something didn't work and I couldn't figure out where the glitch was coming from. By now it was almost midnight and I decided to get some sleep and work on it in the morning since I had taken the day off to watch the Inauguration. My DH went for his CAT scan and then was going directly to work and that's when I discovered where the glitch was and got everything to work and finally was able to post the link to the newsgroup. I figured I had the whole day to watch TV and bind a very large quilt. No one would be home except me and Kirby (the devil dog QI). WRONG!

I got a phone call in the early morning which the caller ID indicated was from the imaging place. DH's CAT scan was done and reviewed - but he needed to go to the ER immediately! Appendicitis had been confirmed, and it was bad!

He was admitted to the hospital by 1 pm and in surgery by 5 pm. The doctor said it was the size of a golf ball - one of the largest he had ever seen and was within hours of perforating. He said he had to have had this for several weeks but DH had no symptoms at all. And he took pictures! Wowzer!

He is doing very well, was awake and joking by 7:00 and moved to a room for an overnight stay where he asked when he could eat! He should be released by dinner time tonight and will recover at home for a week to 10 days. Perhaps I will teach him how to bind that quilt!

{{{{{Alice & DH}}}}} I am very happy to hear that everything is going OK! Hopefully, your DH will be bored enough that you CAN teach him how to bind the quilt and you can get it finished ASAP. I want to add my thanks for the great work you do on the Directory :-). CiaoMeow >^;;^<

Oh, dear, thank goodness he is okay.

My sister had that happen last October. And my brother had that happen when he was 15 - his appendix actually burst.

And, thanks so much for the directory, you do a lot of work on it!

Kirby has really become a "mans dog" in that he has really bonded to my DH. Both of my female Westies (Brandy and Miss Paisley) were all mine. Kirby will be 6 next month and has really taken over the family. Right now he is dealing with a skin infection (yeast) which we think is now under control. Westies are apparently very prone to this although neither of my girls had it. He would get very itchy and bite himself bloody. He actually had several secondary infections at those sites. The vet finally got the combo of meds right and he is doing ok right now. A course of antibiotics cleared up the secondary infections and daily antihistamines keep the itching under control. Right now he is on a fish and potato diet. The dry food we get from the vets is wonderful and he loves it. We also found canned food that is only fish and sweet potato that he likes as well. Unfortunately, he was used to pizza crusts and leftovers (thanks to DH) but now he can't have any of that. The snacks I have found that fit into his diet he won't eat or will only eat once in a while. At least DH has not cheated and has been very good not giving him anything he can't have. His skin has really cleared up nicely and the biting has stopped. Once we get everything cleared up, we can start introducing foods back into his diet to determine if the skin issue is food related. Right now, everything is almost back to normal.

Kirby loves to surf fish with my DH. He actually brings him bait and if he catches a fish, he'll jump into the surf and bring it ashore. When I get a chance I will update his web page and his blog (yes, he has his own blog)with some recent pictures.

Thanks for asking!

Oh gosh Alice, so glad your DH's appendicitis was caught before it ruptured! Whew! Can't believe you managed to get the directory form done in amongst all of the excitement.

Okay, so tell your husband to behave during his recovery. Some husbands are harder to contain than some of our QIs. (Di's Winston comes to mind.)

Thanks Michelle. I just brought him home and I think I am going to have to restrain him somehow. I did feel badly for Kirby though, he really missed his pal and we were trying our hardest not to have him jump into DH's lap! They both found a comfortable position though. DH took a nice shower and feels a bit better. He thinks he's going to work on Monday - yeah, like that's going to happen!

Alice,

Hope Hubby is up and about real soon.

My one and only brain cell has been fried this week with the 4 papers I have due by Monday. If we did the directory last week, is our info there or do we have to do it again since you had the glitch until yesterday?

Thanks Debbi in SO CA

The Directory link was only published on Tuesday. There would have been no other way for you to enter your data until then. The glitch was corrected before the link was made available to the newgroup.

Hubby is doing ok, but not being very cooperative as far as taking it easy. I have threatened restraints if he doesn't relax.

Glad to hear that DH is okay and that he was able to get this taken care of before it got even worse. I hope he has a happy recovery and doesn't drive you absolutely around the bend as some men are prone to do when they are in need of nursing.

Create some statistics for your DH such as how quickly he could bleed to death if something comes loose - or how much fun he'd have going back to have all his stitching re-done. I don't know that either of those is true but they could be. Polly

The threat that WILL work is that they may have to put another drain in. He almost passed out when they removed it yesterday!

----------------------------------------------------- My husband had surgery for cancer in April and woke up with a drain. Two days later the doctor came in to remove it. When he yanked it out, it broke off in DH's stomach. They had to do another surgery to remove the d*** thing. He had to stop eating again, then the surgery, and it added two extra days in the hospital. What a PITA. The doctor had never had that happen before and blamed the tube manufacturer. Then to add insult to injury, thay tried to charge us extra for the extra surgery over and above the amount the insurance paid. I'm still fighting them on it and the insurance company confirms that I don't owe another penny.

I'm glad they were able to get the appendix out in time. Unfortunately in our case, the surgery didn't totally remove all of the cancer, nor did 7 weeks of daily radiation, which he finished during the holidays. Now it's a waiting game. Getting old sucks, but heck, he's only 60.

I'm sorry to hear that Denise. The doctor who did my DH's surgery was wonderful. My SIL who is a nurse at the hospital where my DH had the surgery was with him when the drain was removed. She said it was about 14" long but that the doctor removed it very gently. It doesn't really hurt but my DH said it felt like they were pulling a string attached to his toes. Lots of pressure more than pain. The time was in seconds but felt much longer.

I hope all goes well with your hubby.

So glad your husband went to the doctor. A dear friend had stomach pains last year but ignored them too long. He died while looking up the doctor's telephone number.
