Small Quilted Ornaments That Teach Foundation Piecing

Foundation piecing scares off plenty of quilters, and practicing on full-size blocks gets expensive fast. A batch of little Christmas ornaments turns the technique into something low-stakes, and that is the problem Brita Nelson the Questioning Quilter takes on, pairing the ornaments with a gentle introduction to the method itself.

The construction is satisfyingly simple once the block exists. Scraps are aligned and sewn right sides together along the marked template lines, each piece pressed open and trimmed back until the block is covered, with a quarter-inch seam allowance throughout. The pieced top is laid face down onto backing fabric, with thin polyester batting going on top. That stack gets stitched, trimmed, snipped at each corner and turned right side out. Raw top edges fold inward, a folded narrow ribbon loop tucks into the opening, and topstitching about an eighth of an inch from the edge seals everything shut.

What stands out are the finishing choices. The printable pattern, called Round Ornaments 3 Sizes, carries templates numbered one through seven and comes in three sizes for anyone planning to fill a whole tree. Decoration can go anywhere from fussy-cut center motifs to machine stitching, hand embroidery or bugle beads. The toolkit suits small work: a Bernina machine, rotary cutter, acrylic ruler and grid cutting mat, plus a wooden seam pressing tool, small embroidery scissors and a retractable pen serving as a point turner. For the miniature versions, the design is transferred straight onto muslin with light heat transfer paper, and the maker notes the foundation then needs no tearing away.

A couple of open points. The printable pattern is meant to travel alongside the teaching rather than stand on its own as full foundation piecing instructions, which in my view makes the pairing a smart one for newcomers. And the lesson closes with a preview of a pieced tree ornament block; a separate tree tutorial has been widely requested, but nothing is confirmed yet.

That closing topstitch finish looks tidy, and the numbered templates seem like a friendly way to keep every piece in order. My question is about the miniatures: paper piecing normally leaves you picking paper out afterward. Did the maker explain what takes the paper's place on the smallest ornaments?

The maker does address it. On the miniature versions the pattern is transferred directly onto muslin fabric, and that muslin becomes the foundation itself, so nothing needs tearing away once the stitching is done. A light heat transfer paper is used to move the design onto the fabric for those small pieces.
