Announcing: Starry starry night swap 2007!

Like many people I love the looking at the stars at night wondering how far they are and if there is any life on a planet nearby. One of my favourite paintings is the starry starry night painting by Vincent van Gogh which is why the swap bears this name J

Time line:

v Signup by March 1st 2007 by joining the following yahoo group:

formatting link
Ø And entering your name and the number of sets you HOPE to send in into the participants database. Remember that the number of sets you enter into the data base is not set in stone and you can adjust the numbers as you get closer to the day. It's only final once it's in the mail.

v Mailing deadline May 31st

Ø this is the final day to get your blocks in the mail!

v The blocks will be swapped in the third week of June

v The blocks will be put in the mail by the last week of June

v The blocks will start arriving home in the first week of July

The block method, size and number:

v We will be making 6" FINISHED = 6 ½ inch UNFINISHED stars

v you may use any method to make the stars but please if you are doing appliqué make sure it's firmly fixed with no raw edges showing

v The stars will be swapped in sets of 6 stars. All stars in each set will be the same.

v There is a minimum of 1 set and a maximum of 6 sets

v For each set sent in you will receive 6 different stars back.

Colours to use:

v Each set MUST be completely made with different fabrics but the star pattern may be the same if you choose.

v The colour for the stars is anything between pale yellow and orange

v The background is anything from medium blue to black

Things to remember:

v Stars that are not 6 ½ inches will be returned un-swapped

v Stars that are not well made (seams coming undone etc.) will not be swapped out.

v Attach a slip of paper to the back of each block with your name/location so the recipients can see where their block came from. This is easily done by sewing them on with a large stitch.

v Please to apply sticker nametags directly to the blocks! Some people don't get round to sewing the top for a while and the adhesive can be difficult to remove after a year or two (don't ask me how I know this LOL)

v NO writing on blocks - we are not doing a siggie swap.

Mailing and postage:

v I will send an email with my address after the signup deadline has passed.

v Please include a self-addressed envelope large enough for your blocks to be returned in

v Do not apply stamps to the envelope yourself!

v Postage rates will be in the SSNswap group files in a separate document and are based on the local postal rates - we do not have fixed rate global priority envelopes here so rates will be different that people in the USA are used to.

v European swappers (and anyone else if you have them) may send Euros to cover the postage please contact me for the postage rates.

v Otherwise please pay the postage into my paypal account (it supports direct credit card payments) the addy to use for that will be given in the guidelines you are sent on joining the group.

I think that's all there is to it

Have fun!!

I'm a wee bit confused. At one stage you say "All stars in each set will be the same" and then 3 points later you say "Each set MUST be completely made with different fabrics but the star pattern may be the same".

Don't these two points contradict themselves? Call me silly, blonde or just that my brain took a holiday.....but as a famous (or infamous) Aussie once said - please explain.....please?

nope, it makes sense. if you make one set, all the star designs and fabric must be the same. if you make more 'sets'... each 'set' must use a different fabric from the other sets but the star design can be the same thru all sets. hth, jeanne

if you make one set of 6 stars then they will all be the same - same fabrics and same pattern

if you make 2 sets (2 sets of 6 stars = 12 stars) then you may make *both* sets using, for instance, the friendship star pattern BUT each set of 6 stars must use different fabrics so the first set of 6 all the same stars might use black and pale yellow and the second set of 6 all the same stars might use dark blue and dark yellow

does this clarify?

Just roughly - how much blue and how much yellow fabric for 6 blocks. I know it depends on the design, but just wouldn't want to start cutting and then find I can only make 5.1/2 blocks!

Has anyone got any pictures of completed blocks to stop me dithering?

Sally, If the stars can be patterns of the maker's choice then the yardage will depend on the block.

Easy to do the math, though: let's say you were going to do Friendship Star. For a 6" block you will need 5 2-1/2" squares (the corners and the center) and 4 2-7/8" squares (used to make the HSTs). Total square inches=62.25.

if you are making friendship stars a FQ of each is about enough>if you make a 3 colour star a FQ of each fabric will be more than enough (and leave enough for a block for yourself of the same fabric.

Kate Dicey has a finished quilt from one of the previous swaps on her website

look in the top left hand side for thequilt gallery then it's the top right hand quilt. my blocks are all in a box awaiting enough to make me a queen sized quilt :-) I'll dig a few out and put a photo in my yahoo photo's later

Thanks - will get my ruler out to see what 62.25 sq.ins. looks like. On second thoughts will delegate to DH who can do sums in his head. I am mathematically challenged!!

If I figured this right (dubious at this time of night!), and you are working from scraps/stash - for Friendship Star blocks

a FQ is more than enough for the 6stars and not quite enough for 12 (about 18" X 15" is plenty for 6, & 18" X 26" for 12), and

a 5"strip WOF is more than enough for the 6star backgrounds, and

7.5" strip WOF will make 12star backgrounds.

More complex star patterns might require slightly more fabric. But check my figures someone - please!

Apologies - I think

12 stars should be 18" X 28"

but it will give you a general idea for sorting fabrics for sets of six stars.

that's right Cheryl, however only 6 the same are allowed and each set needs completely different fabrics so it will be plenty :-)

That's a lovely swap quilt Nann! but not from a swap I have hosted as I encourage the use of lots of different stars not just friendship stars :-)

Thank you Cheryl and Jessamy. Now you have sorted me out I will join in! Just have to decide how many sets to do, and then which stars to use.
