Has she tried dying her own fabric yet? A bolt of PFD fabric and a bunch of dyes and equipment would be a cool gift to receive. How about a large ironing board or ironing cabinet- I sure do love the one I built. Does she have a large sewing machine cabinet and all the accessory cabinets? The wooden cabinet full of top quality threads that someone else mentioned sounds like a dream to me!

I only had the idea in my mind from hearing a few mission appeals lately. But, I just had a quick look on Google using 'Sewing Machines to Africa' and 'Sewing Machines to the poor in South America', and both searches threw up many results. I guess you could choose your own part of the world and have a look. I don't know how one would ascertain the reputability of any of such organisations, I'm afraid.

I have one like this too, and it's great. With the "trigger finger" in my right thumb, I can't do a lot of cutting with regular shears; I know I could not have made the dresses for DD's wedding 3 years ago without them.

You folks who went to Houston could have taken the Piping Hot Binding class from Susan Cleveland. I'm sure you would have enjoyed her. She's in my guild and used to teach a lot locally, but since she became "famous", she doesn't teach much around here :( I've taken several classes from her. Her pattern directions are very clear, so I'm sure I could have made them without the classes, but the classes were fun, and she always had extra little tips.

I didn't take her class, Julia, but I did take the Sunday Sampler, where she had a table and gave some information. :) Still, I do rather wish I'd taken her class. I saw some quilters who'd just finished it and who were absolutely delighted with their first-time efforts. :)

Thanks Sherry. Just found out that one of the reasons we have no quilts in the house is that she doing the "Quilts for Valor." These are quilts for wounded American troops as they recuperate in the military hospitals. Heard that this group had a booth at Houston, put they still had to pay for their space (though at a reduced rate). They put this fact up on their website and an anonymous donor paid the cost for them. Frank Reid
