Houston Quilt show!!

I was there!!! but it was my first quilt show ever and I was overwhelmed. WOW!! I probably should have started with something smaller. I walked all day Sat and Sunday and still didn't see everything. on Sat, I absolutely forgot to eat so I didn't even make it to the food court - didn't go to the restroom either - I would start toward one and get distracted. When my DDIL picked me up, I was terrified I wouldn't make it to one. I really wished I had met someone, I kept wanting to ohhhh and ahhhh with someone. Luckily there was usually someone there that wanted to do the same thing. Aren't quilters the nicest people!! I could not believe how many people were from other countries either, but ohhh and ahhh are apparently the same in every language. Next year I'll be more prepared and anxious to meet everyone.

I really want to know more about Michiko Takauwa - the lady that hand pieces hundreds of thousands of hexagons to make awesome quilts. How do you cut out 152,966 7mm hexagons? How do you sew them together???

I'm glad you had fun!

well... one at a time ;-)

however: it's easiest to just cut them out as squares then wrap them around tiny hexagons (1/4 inch ones in fact) baste at the corners and hand sew together - it only takes 3 or 4 per hexagon so it's nice as fast - my friends mother does amazing stuff with tiny hexagons - I stick to larger ones ;-)

i was there all day thursday, friday and saturday and still didnt see everything there. its soooooooooooo big you really need all four days and then some to do it properly. i got to help set up on the wed the week before but didnt see everything then, not even all the quilts that actually got hung that day. by the time we'd finished hanging after 8 hrs all i really wanted to do was lie down flat and put my feet above my head. it is exhausting but heaps of fun.

did you by chance see the quilt frame set up for hand quilting waaaaaaay down at the end of the quilts area? down the middle aisle way down the end near the 'learning center'. i was sitting there having a play for a while both saturday and sunday. not that i had a real clue what i was doing but i did learn how to make a proper quilters know rather than how i used to knot it by wrapping round my finger and rolling it off making a too big nasty knot, lol. oh well, now i do know how to do it properly. gotta learn one new thing at an event like that, eh. mine was small but oh so important. maybe we'll meet up next time. i might make it back again next yr if i survive this trip, lol. jeanne

Me complain about spending his money. Why never!

I haven't yet. This is the first day I have felt up to even being awake....lol.

I am planning to play with the fabrics today to see what will work and not work.... It will be fun. Plus I am going to work on getting the cuts done on the Quilt of Valor kit and another kit. I did go back to the booth where that woman had her fq fabrics bundled and got one of her kits. Today will be dedicated to cuts and gettign things organized to work on for Christmas.

Oh that class I took... answered a lot of questions. Next week, I am going to go to the guild meet up and see about getting myself a *buddy* to help me through some of my weak areas; since you insit on going back to Auckland. ;p

great to hear your class gave you some more answers to all the questions we can come up with, lol. i cant wait to hear how all the fabs look with the panel when you get time, of course. :) i am truly sorry i have to go home to auckland. i dont think i'd survive one summer in TX. the heat is just waaaaaaaaaay too much for this old gal. i've become very climatized in auckland, down at sea level and surrounded by water on nearly all sides. keeps me ever so cool doncha know. then i can use a quilt thru a lot more of the year than i'd ever be able to here in TX, eh.

right now, Pati has driven over to the Saturn dealership to discuss options with them. cant imagine what thats gonna turn out like. its costing them $100 a night and the cost of the rental car each day to keep us here so i'm thinking if they cant fix that car asap those options might well be buy a new or used car from them and get a pretty good deal. tho dont think buying another car was what Pati has in mind as the finances probably arent on the same page at this time. so i wait til she returns and tells me whats going on. i need to get to Phx to fix up some way of wearing my fabrics home. gotta sew some of them into some kind of clothing. i already tried wearing all three of the trousers i brought over here with me. oddly enough they fit over one another nicely and you cant really tell i got 3 pairs on, lol. when ya got chubby legs its just a bit more eh. :))

now i need to somehow make lots of layers of fabric with some nice ones on the outside into some sort of kimono type garment. stitch them all together without cutting any at all. fold them into multiple layers too. gonna be rather heavy to wear home but the option is paying massive amounts for either postage or excess luggage, eeeeeeeeeeeek. i get 50lbs max free in each of two bags plus the carry on but they dont weigh me or my clothing i'm standing in so wearing it home is the best option. also have a pillow in mind.....lower back lumbar support round one with another one higher up that will hang over my upper back or flip up to under my head for pillow, all joined up with a couple more pieces of folded up as straps to wear it. will also make an outside bag to put over the one i carry as my handbag of multiple layers/padding with basting stitches to quilt it and hold it all together. easy to dismantle when i get home so i can wash and fold into my stash again. :)) again, none of that will be weighed and being on my back the folks at check-in probably wont even notice the pillow if i can keep facing them...even backing away til they are busy with the next person. once past check-in its easier. security doesnt really care what my bags weigh or what i'm wearing, as long as its not anything that they dont allow thru the security which to best of my knowledge fabric is okie dokie, eh. ok, i'm rambling big time now. its boring waiting especially alone. sigh.... could go have a shower and watch some TV i guess eh. cheers til next msg or email from Phx if we're on the road soon. hugz, jeanne

Hey Jeanne - Pati's got all those wonderful sewing supplies with her in the car!

Why not pull out the machine or some needles and thread and start doing that sewing while you are bored and having to wait in the hotel?

Hugs, Tina

Make yourself a blanket to carry on... to go with your pillow.... You can use the fabs for your top and bottom of your blanket.... that would help I think.....

As soon as I empty out my camera, I am thinking about taking pictures of the panel andd the fabs then go from there. If I do... I will email/I M you then we can talk about it further....

Let me know about the car dear..... I have a feeling sense of humors are going by the wayside.

I was part of the Butterfly, Joshua, Tricia and hubby Michael group, along with mom that sat at the end of the seating in front of the flag across from the restrooms. I was sorry not to have seen anyone. I did have a lovely chat with the chat room people on both Friday and Saturday.

Don't think I'll make it down next year. But my suggestion is to call people at hotels and leave messages. I was travelling the week before the show and didn't have access to any e-mail accounts to see where and what people were doing until I read my 255 e-mails today. Hope to see some pictures of the groups that met. Tricia's hubby took a shot of us eating Pat's chocolates that Butterfly brought her. YUM!

Travelogue will follow probably tomorrow. Celebrated a friends 75th birthday after arriving home this a.m. at 0100.

Tina, If I had known that we would be there that long I would have moved the machine and a couple of projects to the rental and worked on them. However, it was only to be a day or two and it didn't seem like it was worth it. Sigh

Have to head back, now it looks like Mon., to pick up the car now that it is finally finished......
