any working on a Dear Jane quilt?

I have the Dear Jane book (wonderful bedtime reading) and enough fabrics in my stash to get me started on some blocks. I'm sure I don't have enough for the whole thing right now. Would anyone like to do a small swap of fabrics? How much "background" is needed?

You need a lot of background.... more than you think you will need. I am using Roclon muslin (45" wide) as my background so I can buy in chunks instead of all at once. It also depends on if you are hand or machine piecing and what seam allowance you are using. (Minimum is at least 5 1/2 yards of background, more if your sashings are going to be the same.) There is someplace that was mentioned on the DJ list that sells fat 16ths which are great for Janers. Or try to pick up charm packs that are pairs of 5" squares.

Good luck with your journey.......... and do check out the DJ list for lots more help. Brenda also has tips and such on her website. (Just do a search for DearJane.)

Hullo Yvette The 'background quantity' seems to be one of the last unanswered questions of the century!! But, as Pati said, it really does depend on how you are going to do it. I am doing one, but it is on hold at the moment. It will be picked up again just as soon as I complete my current project (which has a deadline). I am doing mine with an unusually limited palette, I'm afraid. But how are you planning to do yours? There are so many ways. I very much agree with the suggestion that you have a look at the Dear Jane website.

Thanks Pati. You must have been at this a long time to accomplish so much of the DH top already.

Yes...lots of background fabric, I figure 6 meters. I haven't started my Baby Jane...yet. But a couple of years ago I planned on making a king size Cathedral windows quilt. DH, being the sweetie that he is (read enabler) got me a full bolt of good quality white muslin for Christmas (along with the requisite chocolate of course). So as soon as I get to finishing my Cathedral windows (somehow it turned into a UFO), I should have enough fabric left over for my Baby Jane quilt.

I've been working on my DJ for almost 2 years now. And am thinking of starting a second one, probably not all the blocks but not sure. I have decided that I will sash and join the blocks by machine. Not up for all that straight sewing by hand. But I have been enjoying the hand piecing for most of it.

Pati, in Phx, hoping you enjoy working on yours as much as I do mine.

I am hoping to do it in fabrics as close to civil war repros as possible. I really like the look of the original (the Mother) quilt and would like to have one like it. Let's see how it goes. I'm not expecting to get this one done anytime soon. I wonder what the record is for the shortest amount of time to complete.

Oh, good. I am starting with seven yards of muslin. I also cut off a big sample so I can match it as close as possible at a store.
