Arabic

Just wondering if there are any Arabic speakers or who at least could tell me how to ask for 100% cotton,no Polyesther fabric. I have a friend who is going to Eygpt and says she will bring me some back if I can find out how to ask for it! lol TIA

Egyptian cotton is renown so it will be easy to find and identify. I don't recall seeing quilting fabric in Cairo, but it's been 20 years since I was there.

there wasn't any quilting fabric in Cairo 2 years ago either - I did find a panel like the ones the builders use to screen the sites with - 100% cotton but the dye bleeds and fades badly when washed and the smell - well I won't go there. My ex BIL and SIL didn't know of anywhere to by cotton fabric and they

*live* in Cairo. *however* Cairo is HUGE ( over 20 million people) and who knows what is out there if one asks around.

AFAIK "Egyptian cotton" is a variety of long-staple cotton and need not have anything to do with Egypt, although they surely grow cotton there. And probably sell most of the crop to mills in Asia.

However, I once saw a magazine article (National Geographic?) on traditional applique panels made to decorate the inside of tents. The photos showed men doing the applique. Used all solid colors. Roberta in D

I should have explained that I want white cotton for dyeing,Percale would be ideal. She got me some lovely white"cotton" in March, that an Eygptian friend bought for her on my behalf. It did however after the burns test prove( to my mind) to have some polyester in it.It was lovely and soft but it dyed too evenly.I wanted the marbled effect. We dont want to ask him again to get it,he might be bit hurt!lol So the correct words for said friend would be helpful!

Hi

My Red Sea Berlitz Phrase book gives cotton as: quTn. 100 is mi'a. Can't find percent but it might be worth asking: "ureed quTn mi'a percent min faDlak". "I would like 100% cotton please"

Always worth a try. :-))

Good luck!!

you know that looks just about right! I was waiting to ask ex when I saw him tomorrow to type it in for me but Eddie's slightly odd looking phonetic version will get you the goods nicely - just pronounce the way he typed it :-) (ex could never manage phonetic so this has made things easier for you!) I understand more Arabic than I speak and according my ex's family my writing is good but since I usually copy a prewritten bit of text I can only hope I am "writing" what I wanted to LOL

Well done Eddie for coming up with the goods!

Thanks for that. How funny that my interest in learning Arabic has been of help to this group! :-))

Sue says that she has bought Egyptian cotton by mail order from Croftmill.

Lookin up the derivation of the word cotton I see from my dictonary that it comes from the Arabic dialect "qutun" from Arabic "qutn" C14 century.
